Qualcomm Co-Founder to Donate $52 Million to
University of Southern California

Los Angeles (AP) 3.1.04, 8:15a -- Qualcomm co-founder Andrew J. Viterbi and his wife Erna are donating $52 million dollars to the University of Southern California.

To show its gratitude the university will name its engineering school after the couple.

The one-time cash gift will be announced at a ceremony Tuesday on campus and will go to the engineering school's endowment.

The donation will enhance USC's effort to be considered among the nation's top engineering schools such as Caltech, Stanford, MIT and UC Berkeley.

Viterbi earned his doctorate in electrical engineering from U-S-C in 1962 and pioneered the technology used in cellular telephones.
