Engineers as Teachers (AME490) Course
The Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering department allows its undergraduates to earn 3 Technical Elective credits for developing and teaching hands-on science courses to K-12 children in under-served communities. This semester (Fall 08), students followed a 7-week training in educational psychology, lesson planning, evaluation and motivation, after which they went into the community and conducted 8 full courses and 6 single-session courses at 9 different LAUSD schools - reaching more than 420 children and 120 parents.
Amongst the topics taught: Renewable Energy, Physics of Sailing, Optics, Anatomy through MRI, Sports Science, Animal Locomotion and CardioVascular Mechanics.
