About the Department
The Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering just celebrated 100 years of engineering excellence! Established in 1906, it hosts one of the premier engineering programs in the United States. It is part of the Viterbi School of Engineering, which has been systematically ranked by US News World Records in the top ten engineering schools of the United States. The faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering includes 23 professors and 43 lecturers. The Department has approximately 420 students (225 undergraduate 195 graduate). It has strong research programs that attract $5 million in annual research funding from government and industry.

- Statement of Purpose
- The statement of purpose should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at the Viterbi School of Engineering, your preparation for this field of study, study interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study.
- Recommendation Letters
- Letters of recommendation should be from faculty or others (supervisors, professional colleagues, etc.) qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study. If unable to submit through the online application, letters should be submitted on official letterhead.
Please arrange to have the following sent to the USC Office of Admission (USC Graduate Office of Admission, University Park Campus, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0915):
- Official Transcript(s) from all post-secondary schools you have attended, and official translations if they are not in English.
- Official general GRE scores (no older than 5 years) sent through ETS to the University of Southern California, ETS code 4852
