International students that do not demonstrate adequate English proficiency are required to take English language courses through USC's American Language Institute. ALI's courses are designed to improve students' oral and written communications skills in English. Those required to take courses at ALI will be notified upon acceptance to the program.
International Students' Assembly [Back to top]
The International Students' Assembly is one of the largest student run assemblies at USC. It serves as an umbrella organization to a majority of the nationality clubs on campus, working closely with the Program Board, member clubs and organizations and the Office of International Services to actively promote the international community on campus.

MAPP advisors are happy to assist international students with the process of obtaining Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Curricular Training (OPT), or reduced course load.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) offers an opportunity for international students to gain valuable, real world experience as a part of their education in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is designed for students with F-1 visa status. It is designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain actual employment experiences in your chosen profession for a maximum of one year, before or after completing a degree program, to complement your academic work.
Reduced Course Load Approval
International students can reduce a course of study based on academic difficulty, registration in 790 for research, registration in 800 to prepare for his/her qualifying examination, units needed to graduate, enrollment in another university at the same time, or a medical condition.

USC is home to over 5,500 international students from 115 different countries and the Office of International Services (OIS) provides the resources and services needed to make the transition the United States as easy as possible. OIS will assist with visa applications, financial aid information, general advisment, career services, and many additional services. Because of these special circumstances, it is important to know as much as possible about employment options. The Viterbi Career Services Office and the Office of International Services work together to help eligible international students obtain internship and employment opportunites both in the US and abroad.
