Jody Hoffer Gittell  

Jody Hoffer Gittell, Ph.D.

 

 
 

Jody Hoffer Gittell, Ph.D. is Professor of Management at Brandeis University, and Visiting Faculty Director of the MIT Leadership Center. Her research explores how coordination by front-line workers contributes to quality and efficiency outcomes in service settings, with a particular focus on the airline and health care industries. She has developed a theory of relational coordination, proposing that work is most effectively coordinated through relationships of shared goals, shared knowledge and mutual respect, and demonstrating how organizations can support relational coordination through the design of high performance work systems.

Dr. Gittell is the author of dozens of articles and chapters, and books titled The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve High Performance (McGraw-Hill, 2003), Up In the Air: How the Airlines Can Improve Performance by Engaging Their Employees (Cornell University Press, 2009), and High Performance Healthcare (McGraw-Hill, 2009). She is also the author or creator of more than fifty articles and chapters.

Dr. Gittell is currently the Associate Professor of Management for the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. She is also the visiting Faculty Director at the MIT Leadership Center until June 2011. Dr. Gittell is the Co-Chair of the Health Care Industry Council. From 2004 – 2007, she was the Airline Industry Council Co-Chair and from 200 to present she has been a faculty member of the MIT Global Airline Industry Program. Dr. Gittell was an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School from 1995 – 2001.

Dr. Gittell teaches the following courses: Human Resources Management, Operations Management, and Organizational Theory.
