3/2 Engineering Program

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering has established 3/2 programs with many four-year liberal arts colleges around the country. Students in a 3/2 program earn two bachelors degrees in 5 years, one in a liberal arts field and one in engineering. Typically, students spend their first 3 years at a liberal arts school and then transfer to USC and spend 2 years completing their engineering program.

Program requirements are strict and students must complete specific course requirements at both schools. To apply to transfer as a 3/2 student, you must attend a partner school, complete course requirements outlined in the 3/2 agreement prior to transferring, and complete both the USC Transfer Application and the Viterbi Supplemental Application.

If you are currently attending one of the Viterbi School’s four-year partner institutions and are interested in the 3/2 Program, you should contact your current academic advisor and the USC Viterbi School prior to applying to transfer.

Coursework Recommendations

Coursework requirements vary by major and partner institution.  Students interested in the 3/2 Engineering Program should consult with their current academic advisor and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.  Most students participating in the 3/2 Engineering Program take the following courses BEFORE transferring into engineering at USC.
  • General Education -- Requirements vary by school.
  • Mathematics -- Requirements vary by school and engineering major, but most students complete Calculus I, II, III, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.
  • Physics -- Requirements vary by major.  Sequence should cover thermodynamics, mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, and modern physics.
  • Chemistry -- Requirements vary by major, but most students take General Chemistry I and II.  Chemical and Biomedical Engineers will also be required to take Organic Chemistry prior to transfer.
  • Computer Programming -- Computer Engineering Majors should take C++, all other majors need MATLAB.
  • Writing -- At least one semester of lower-division writing.
  • Additional Engineering Coursework (if offered)

3/2 Engineering Agreement Guide

The 3/2 Agreement Guide identifies the courses you need to take at your partner institution before transferring to USC. It also lists the engineering coursework that you will take after you transfer to USC. Please contact your 3/2 Program advisor or a Viterbi transfer admission counselor for a copy of your 3/2 Program Agreement Guide.
