Herbert Kroemer

Heterostructures: From Physics to Devices and Back

Herbert Kroemer, a Nobel Laureate in Physics (2000) for "semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics," gave the 2008 Munushian Lecture.

Kroemer is known for his awarded experimental work and is considered one of the early pioneers in molecular beam epitaxy, concentrating from the outset on applying the technology to untried new materials systems, such as GaP and GaAs on silicon.

Kroemer is currently a professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, he held positions at several research laboratories in Germany - his country of origin - and the U.S.
