Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University Tours Viterbi School Labs

February 18, 2006 —
A delegation of faculty and administrators from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore toured the Viterbi School on Feb. 16 and met with senior administrators and faculty to explore potential collaboration in research and education in digital and interactive media.

The Singapore/Viterbi Delegation — Chan-Hin Kam, dean of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, is in the front. Behind him is Alex Kot, vice dean for research, left, and Yap-Peng Tan, head of Information Engineering, right.  Behind them, left-to-right, are: Jay Kuo, professor in electrical engineering-systems; Gerard Medioni, chairman of the Viterbi School Computer Science Department; Antonio Ortega, professor in electrical engineering-systems; Alexander “Sandy” Sawchuk, professor and chair of Electrical Engineering-Systems; and Cauligi Raghavendra, senior associate dean for academic affairs.

Members of the delegation included Chan-Hin Kam, dean of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Nanyang Technological University; Alex C. Kot, vice dean for research in Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Yap-Peng Tan, head of Information Engineering; and Shiling Lim, director, Singapore Economic Development Board.

Nanyang Technological University, which has a strong program in information technology, computer sciences, electrical and electronics engineering, is interested in collaborating with the Viterbi School to develop new research and education programs in digital and integrated media technologies.

“I think there are a lot of possibilities here for collaboration,” said Kam, who earned his MSEE from USC in 1986. “USC has a lot of unique strengths. We are very interested, for instance, in the school’s work in distributed media technology.”

The delegation was hosted by a group of Viterbi School senior administrators, which included Steve Nutt, senior associate dean for research and the M.C. Gill Chair in Composite Materials; Gerard Medioni, chair of the Computer Science Department; Chris Kyriakakis, deputy director, Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC); and Mike Zyda, director of the GamePipe Laboratory. The group also included Cauligi Raghavendra, senior associate dean for academic affairs; Alexander "Sandy" Sawchuk, professor and chair of Electrical Engineering-Systems; Dan Dapkus, the William M. Keck Chair in Engineering and head of the USC Photonics Center; and Isadora Gullov-Singh, executive director, Corporate and Foundation Relations, External Relations.

After touring several Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) laboratories, the USC Photonics Center, and participating in a demonstration by Mike Zyda in the GamePipe Laboratory, the group enjoyed a dinner in downtown L.A., hosted by Viterbi School Dean Yannis Yortsos, who is the Zohrab A. Kaprielian Chair in Engineering.
