Carl Kesselman, a professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, is a specialist in sharing data and computational resources — he was one of the creators of Grid Computing.

Grid techniques for collaboration using linked, widely distributed infrastructure are now widely used by scientists trying to understand complex phenomena like high energy physics, earthquakes, or climate.

Kesselman is adapting them to aid clinicians trying to bring together enormous volumes of medical research with huge volumes of information about individual patients.

Kesselman is leading two parallel efforts in this area: the Center for Health Informatics, and the Biomedical Informatics Research Network.
