Hsieh Department Professor C.C. Jay Kuo will continue as leader of the USC Viterbi School's Signal and Image Processing Institute, after being unanimously reelected by members of the long-established unit, an international leader in its field.

Hsieh Department EE-Systems Chair Alexander Sawchuk announced the reelection. "Jay has done an excellent job as SIPI Director during his three years in this position, and I look forward to his continued leadership."

Founded in 1971, SIPI was one of the first research organizations in the world dedicated to image processing. Much of the early work on transform coding, now the basis of the JPEG and MPEG standards for still and video image compression and transmission, was conducted within SIPI.

Research in SIPI has been at the forefront of signal processing with fundamental work on the development of signal processing theory based on higher-order statistics, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. SIPI researchers are also active in the design of VLSI, optical and opto-electronic systems for fast implementation of signal processing algorithms.

Kuo's research group, the Media Communications Lab, has 30 students and 90 alumni, and maintains close interaction with the IT industry.  He has received research grants from more than 40 companies, and has published more than 150 journal papers and 750 conference papers.

Kuo has received numerous recognition and awards, including the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award (1992), the Presidential Faculty Fellow Award (1993), the USC Junior Faculty Research Award (1994), best paper awards from the IEEE Communication Society (2005), the IEEE Vehicular Technology Fall Conference (2006), and the IEEE Conference on Intelligent Information Hiding and Multimedia Signal Processing (2006), and the Okawa Foundation Research Grant (2007).  He was an IEEE Signal Processing Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2006.  Jay is a Fellow of IEEE and SPIE.

Kuo joined USC in 1989.  He received the B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University, Taipei, in 1980, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1985 and 1987, respectively, all in electrical engineering.
