"When It Comes to Tsunamis, Bad Information Kills"

December 24, 2009 —

Professor Costas Synolakis of the Astani Department spoke to reporters on the anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean catastrophe.

From a story in Nature, Tsunami Watch

“In the Indian Ocean region there is a tremendous amount of work yet to be done,” says Costas Synolakis, director of the University of Southern California’s Tsunami Research Center in Los Angeles. “It is urgent work, because when it comes to tsunamis, bad information kills."

Asian News International included the same quote in its story on the events, "People still not prepared to face tsunami even after 5 yrs of Indian Ocean disaster"

From a widely syndicated story from CNN: Asian tsunami warning system: A last-mile challenge

"But experts said the new instruments and drills are not enough. Educating communities about how to react to signs of a threat like a tsunami -- with or without an official warning -- is what they see as a key challenge. 'Technology will improve ... the question is how we go to the last mile,' said Costas Synolakis, a professor of civil engineering at the University of South California.
