CMS Overview:
The USC Viterbi School of Engineering has available a Content Management System (CMS) that allows for a website to be managed by non-technical users from distributed locations. This system will empower anyone with basic Microsoft Word and Internet skills to be able to update or create web pages. The system is flexible so more advanced users will have the ability to directly edit HTML code or user PHP code in their site. Site administrators are given the flexibility to control site themes, privileges, publishing destinations, and access.
The CMS is a software tool that facilitates the merging of site content with a graphical look. The Viterbi CMS is hosted on a Viterbi server and you will be given access accounts. This system can be used from any computer as long as it has a compatible internet browser. The CMS will then “publish” (merge your site content and theme and transfer via FTP) to a server of your choice. The Viterbi CMS will NOT host your website. The public website must be hosted elsewhere. The CMS will publish via FTP or SFTP and the files will be static HTML so they will work on just about any server.
A website within the CMS contains several components, including:
- The Content
- The theme (template)
- Navigation
- Modules
- Administration
