This year, we are no longer requiring nominations for the Fellowship.  Instead, qualified Fellowship applicants should submit applications directly to the Switzer Foundation per our updated program guidelines available at http://www.switzernetwork.org/fellowship-guidelines.html.  All necessary forms and materials are available online at http://www.switzernetwork.org/fellowship-forms.html.

Given our increased focus this year on seeking applicants from southern California, we are pleased to announce that this year, we are partnering with the Annenberg Foundation to increase the number of Switzer Fellowships in California, dedicating at least five Switzer Environmental Fellowships to southern California graduate students in recognition of the need for innovative environmental leaders to solve problems unique to that region.

This year’s application deadline is Thursday, February 1, 2008.  Again, no nominations are required!  Please be sure to continue to exercise the same careful level of evaluation when recommending students to our program, as competition for these Fellowships is intense and will be even more so this year.

Attached is a Call for Applications which describes the Fellowship program and its requirements.  Please pass this on to eligible candidates and colleagues, and post to your departmental, financial aid or graduate student office bulletin boards!

If you have any questions about the revised guidelines or the application process, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Switzer Foundation staff.  Thank you, and we look forward to receiving your students’ applications!

Scholarship Program
In partnership with private donors, JVS administers a scholarship program to provide qualified local students with need-based financial aid. Since its founding in 1972, the JVS Scholarship Program has awarded $3.2 million to over 2,800 students. Today's recipients are pursuing studies at colleges, universities and vocational schools nationwide.
Thank you for your interest in the JVS Scholarship Program. Please carefully read all information contained on this page before submitting your application.
Purpose of Scholarship
Through the granting of scholarships, the JVS Scholarship Program strengthens the Jewish Community by supporting financially needy Jewish students from Los AngelesCounty in their pursuit of college, graduate, and vocational education.

Award Amount
Scholarship awards are currently offered in the amounts of $500 to $5,000 each.
Eligibility Guidelines
Applicants must:
  • be Jewish
  • be a U.S. citizen or documented legal permanent U.S. resident (green card)
  • be a permanent and legal resident of Los AngelesCounty
  • be planning to attend full-time (12 units minimum per term) at an approved college or vocational school in the U.S.
  • maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA.
Primary criteria for scholarship selection are financial need.  We also consider Jewish community involvement and community service.  Financial need is verified by federal income tax returns.  Prior to submitting their JVS Scholarship Program application, applicants must file a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
All applicants must be planning to attend full-time at an approved college, university, vocational school, graduate school or medical school in the 2008-2009 academic year.  All applicants must remain in good academic standing and be making timely progress towards a degree or vocational certificate.  JVS assists students studying in standard academic programs on a traditional academic calendar.  JVS does not offer scholarship aid for weekend programs, summer sessions, research, part-time studies, correspondence or distance-learning studies, or for any college or vocational school that has not received approval from the U.S. Department of Education for federal student aid funding.
It is expected that applicants will explore and pursue all sources of financial assistance, such as federal and state loans, as well as institutional scholarships.  It is not our policy to assist applicants who use JVS as their only financial aid resource.
Scholarship award decisions are made for one academic year at a time.  Applicants must reapply and re-qualify each year if they wish to be considered for funds for subsequent years.  Available funding and the applicant pool vary every year and there is never any guarantee of an award.
If you have any questions, please email Cathy Kersh, Scholarship Program Manager at scholarship@jvsla.org

Phi Beta Kappa International Student Awards

Alpha Association of Phi Beta Kappa Alumni in Southern California funds and administers Phi Beta Kappa International Student Awards for foreign students engaged in graduate study in Southern California. Last year's awards ranged from $500 to $2000. Applications from USC students are first screened by the Graduate School before they are forwarded to the Phi Beta Kappa scholarship committee. The deadline to submit applications to the Graduate School (c/o Richard Tithecott) is Monday, March 17th, 2008.  Please see the application form for information about additional application materials that are required.

For the 2008 application form, go to:

For the faculty recommendation form:

Please forward this e-mail to any eligible students in your program. The forms can also be downloaded at the Phi Beta Kappa Southern California Alumni website: http://www.pbk-socal.org

In granting scholarship awards, the committee considers both financial need and merit. The best students are awarded scholarships, that is, those with high academic performance and other qualities normally thought of as requirements for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Need, however, is also weighed heavily, and scholarship funds are not awarded to students who are not in need of the funds. Guidelines include the following:

(1) Academic year 2008-2009 should be, as far as is predictable, a candidate’s final year of study. Evidence of registration for the coming fall is required before checks can be distributed.

(2) Candidates are expected to be pursuing a Ph.D. or the usual terminal degree in their field. Supported terminal degrees include MFA, DMA, or other masters programs in the fine arts. Professional degrees such as MBA, JD, LLD, MD, or DDS are not supported. Master's degrees in fields where Ph.D.s are commonly pursued (even if not offered at your institution) are not eligible.

(3) Candidates should be returning to their home country soon after earning their degree - though a limited post doc in the US is allowed.

(4) Repeat awards are refused.

(5) The size of an award depends on the need and quality of an applicant.

(6) A completed application must contain: a completed form, a short essay on scholarly and professional ambitions (not necessarily limited to the space provided); 3 letters of recommendation; a (rough estimate) justification of need.
