The Education and Research Foundation for SNM

The Cassen Postdoctoral Fellowship
Program Operating Procedures

In addition to the Cassen Prize and the Cassen Lectureship, the Cassen Estate also established a Postdoctoral Fellowship. This special award provides an opportunity for recent doctoral degree recipients, who have demonstrated exceptional ability, to broaden their experience by participating in research activities at an institution other than their degree-granting institution. Postdoctoral Fellowships currently carry an award of $50,000.

The fellowship will be awarded to recent doctoral degree (PhD or MD, PhD) recipients demonstrating an excellent academic record and exceptional research ability. Its purpose is to broaden recipients' basic exposure to nuclear medicine research at an institution different from that conferring the doctoral degree. The award, amounting to $50,000 per year, is for one year. Renewal for a second year is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance the first year, and is determined by the Cassen Committee.

A list of the most recent Cassen Postdoctoral Fellows includes:

• 2003-2004  Deborah Pareto, PhD; Functional Imaging, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA; Estrogen receptors in the human brain

• 2006   Daniela Pelligrino, PhD; Department of Radiology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA; Investigation of the role of carbon-11- and/or fluorine-18 labeled dopamine uptake inhibitor, dopamine receptor and metabotrophic glutamine ligands in vitro

• 2006-2007 Weibo Cai, PhD; Stanford University, Stanford, CA; Radiolabled vascular endothelial growth factor for tumor vasculature imaging, radiolabeled polyvalent RGD peptides for cancer imaging and therapy and radiolableled humanized monoclonal antibody MEDI-522 for cancer imaging and radioimmunotherapy

• 2008  Xiuling Lu, PhD; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC; Dual-Imaging- Therapeutic Nanovectors

Selection Criteria:

• Applicants must be recent doctoral degree (PhD or MD, PhD) recipients who have achieved an excellent academic record and demonstrated exceptional research ability.

• The sponsoring institution must be different from that conferring the doctoral degree.

• The research sponsored by this award should not be an extension of the applicant's doctoral research.

• No more than five (5) years can have passed from the date the doctoral degree was granted to the starting date of the appointment. In exceptional circumstances and based on proper justification, the Board of Directors of the Education and Research Foundation may waive this requirement (e.g., for scientists proposing a major change in their career direction or a second career).

• The period between the conferring of this award and the start date of the applicant’s appointment cannot exceed nine (9) months. Beyond that time, the award lapses, but the applicant may reapply.

• The award is made to an individual through the sponsoring institution. The award check is remitted directly to the institution. Expenditure of award funds is limited to the candidate’s salary plus fringe benefits and under no circumstances will the award include any payment for institutional overhead charges. The sponsoring institution is expected to provide all other required support
.
• The award cannot be transferred to another principal investigator at the sponsoring institution.

• This award is intended to provide an opportunity to broaden the applicant’s basic science research experience and exposure to nuclear medicine research. Therefore, it is deemed improper to request Cassen Fellows to divert research efforts to work not directly associated with their own research, or to work that does not broaden their training or experience.

• The foremost criterion for an applicant’s selection is the candidate’s record of achievement as evidenced undergraduate and graduate transcripts, lists of publications and letters of recommendation.

• While any qualified candidate can be considered for research at a US/Canadian institution, for research proposed to be carried out at a non-US/Canadian institution, candidates must be US citizens.

• The purpose of this award is to attract exceptional new scientific talent into nuclear medicine. Each applicant is required to provide the Cassen Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee with a one page statement of his/her short-term and long-term plans and goals.

• Awards will be granted only when outstanding candidates, as determined by the Cassen Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee, have applied.

Proposal Requirements:

1. A cover letter addressed to the Cassen Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee from the sponsor, with approval signature of the appropriate Department Chairman, containing (in tabular form) the proposal’s basic data as follows:
a. The candidate’s name
b. The candidate’s citizenship
c. The sponsor’s name and degree
d. Date of receipt of PhD degree
e. Awarding institution
f. Graduate GPA

DOE Announces Two New Clean Technology Fellowships

On March 10, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced the creation of two new fellowships for recently-graduated graduate students that focus on clean energy technologies. The new programs, the Postdoctoral Fellowships Program and the SunShot Initiative Fellowships Program, are designed to align with the Administration’s goal of increasing job creation and U.S. competitiveness and innovation through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. DOE Secretary Steven Chu intends these programs to attract the country’s top scientific talent to work on renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

The Postdoctoral Fellowships Program, under the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), will support up to 20 postdoctoral fellows to conduct research in the areas of fuel cells, wind or water power, advanced materials, industrial efficiency, building efficiency, and biomass, geothermal, or solar energy. Ideal candidates will have had academic careers that focus on specific issues in one or more of these areas. Fellows will work to develop innovative technologies that will help increase the efficiency and affordability of clean technologies. Applications are due June 30, 2011. Fellowships will begin in November 2011 and will last two years.

For information on the Postdoctoral Fellowships Program and application instructions, please see http://www1.eere.energy.gov/education/postdoctoral_fellowships/.

The SunShot Initiative Fellowships Program is open to recent Master’s or Ph.D. graduates. In line with the SunShot Initiative’s goal of a 75 percent reduction in total cost for solar energy systems by 2020, selected fellows will work at DOE’s Solar Energy Technologies Program headquarters located in Washington, D.C. to develop innovations in the design, construction, and installation of solar systems. This program is seeking three to five fellows. Applications for the SunShot program are accepted year-round on a rolling basis.

For information on the SunShot Initiative Fellowships Program and application instructions, please see http://www1.eere.energy.gov/education/stp_fellowships.html.
