The Viterbi School Dean's Doctoral Fellowships Benefits
The Viterbi School provides fellowships to gifted doctoral students in all fields of engineering. The selection process emphasizes superior academic record, demonstrated research experience and potential for completing the independent, original, scholarly research in his or her chosen field that is expected of every Ph.D. student.
The Annenberg Fellowships
The Annenberg Fellowships fund PhD students who conduct communication-related research and advance important new programs in the communication arena. Funding for the USC Annenberg Graduate Fellowship Program is made possible by the Annenberg Center Endowment.
The Provost’s Fellowships
The Provost’s Fellowship program funds annually up to 100 of USC’s best and brightest PhD students in all areas across the discipline spectrum.
2011-2012 Ming Hsieh Institute Ph.D. Scholars
Each year, a select group of 5-6 top Ph.D. students from the EE department are to be named "Ming Hsieh Institute Ph.D. Scholars." This set of students will be chosen carefully by a faculty committee on the basis of their research accomplishments and desire for an academic career beyon the Ph.D. The MHI Scholars are considerd the top students in the departnent and prove to be leaders.

Mork Scholarships and Fellowships
The Mork Scholarships and Fellowships are available to outstanding applicants at the undergraduate and Ph.D. levels. All timely applications are considered for these awards. In order to guarantee that your application is considered, we urge you to submit it before December 1st.
The Alfred E. Mann Innovation in Engineering Doctoral Fellowships
Fellowship provide $33,000 per year, renewable for up to 3 years and are intended to support students conducting doctoral research that is either interdisciplinary in nature (biology; medicine; engineering) or relevant to biology and medicine. Engineering departments nominate candidates for these fellowships each spring semester.
WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Fellowships for Ph.D. Students and Postdoctoral Scholars
Ph.D. top-off awards, Ph.D. merit fellowships for continuing students, and fellowship support to accommodate Pregnancy, Birth and Adoption. Candidates are nominated by the faculty in their department.
GEM (National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc) Fellowship Top-Off awards
Supplemental multi-year awards from the Viterbi School to GEM Fellowship recipients in addition to the tuition, fee and stipend amounts of the GEM fellowship.
All Fellows receive tuition and payment of health and dental insurance year round for four years.
Annenberg and Provost’s Fellows receive $30,000 toward living expenses for four years, including at least two years in the form of Fellowship and the remaining two years consisting of teaching and/or research assistantships with a supplemental stipend.
Viterbi Dean's Doctoral Fellows receive a stipend of $30,000 in the first year, and, in years two, three and four, they will hold teaching and/or research assistantships and receive an additional $5,000 top-off stipend per year.
Application and Selection
Students apply online to the PhD program of their choice and submit all required supporting documentation (transcripts, GRE scores, a statement of their academic and professional goals, and at least 3 letters of recommendation). There is no separate Fellowship application. Admission applications undergo a rigorous review by faculty in each engineering department. Faculty select students who show outstanding promise as scholars and researchers, and nominate them to the Office of the Dean for the Viterbi Dean's Doctoral Fellowships, and to the Graduate School for the Annenberg and Provost’s Fellowships. Annenberg and Provost’s Fellowhip selections are announced to individual students by the Graduate School. Viterbi Dean's Doctoral Fellows selected are notified by their department.
Eligibility
Applicants to PhD programs in engineering for the 2011-2012 academic year are eligible for fellowship consideration, provided that they have completed the application for admission and have submitted all supporting documents no later than January 1, for entrance in the following Fall Semester. Earlier application, by December 1, is recommended.
