Leave of Absence (LOA)

It is possible for students to take a Leave of Absence (LOA) from the University for a specified period of time.  Students might choose to take an LOA for a variety of reasons including academic difficulties, financial problems, family emergencies, employment opportunities or simply wanting some time off from academics.

If you plan to take a leave of absence from USC, please take the following steps prior to leaving:
  1. Access the Undergraduate Handbook for Leave of Absence.
  2. Print copies of the Leave of Absence Form and the Guidelines for Withdrawal Checklist located at the end of the Handbook.
  3. Contact an advisor in the Viterbi Admission and Student Affairs Office to discuss your reasons for leaving USC and complete the Leave of Absence Form.
  4. If you will be gone for more than one semester and would like to take classes while you are gone, you may ONLY transfer in courses that are taken during the summer term.
Only under extreme, extenuating circumstances may you have fall or spring courses PRE-APPROVED for transfer credit.
Please discuss this option with an advisor in the Admission and Student Affairs Office.
  5. Follow all procedures for transferring course work.
  6. Contact the Financial Aid Office and discuss your current aid package and future eligibility.
Students should also discuss repayment policies on any of their loans.
  7. Be aware of future Financial Aid deadlines
  8. Finally, make sure you review and complete all relevant items on the Withdrawal Checklist.
