First Year Excellence
First Year Excellence (FYE) is designed to support student success and to help ensure a smooth transition to USC and Viterbi. Through a variety of different programs and services, first year students are able to:
Through the following components of FYE, students are able to accomplish the above goals and have a positive transition into USC and Viterbi.
New Student Welcome
The Viterbi School of Engineering invites all new undergraduate engineering students to its annual New Student Welcome, part of the University Welcome Week activities. Join faculty, staff, and current Viterbi students as we enjoy some food and fun! You will connect with current student leaders, learn about getting involved in Viterbi student organization, interact with faculty from each engineering separtment, and be in the class photo! The Viterbi Admission and Student Affairs Division offers a variety of advising and student support programs for engineering students. All freshmen are assigned, based on their major, to a first-year advisor who will help guide and facilitate their transition into Viterbi. In addition to helping students select courses, the first-year advisor will also introduce students to the various resources that Viterbi has to offer.
As part of the engineering curriculum, every freshman Viterbi student will take an introductory course during their first year. Through these courses, student will gain exposure to the engineering field that they have chosen and also get their first opportunity to get to know a faculty member in that field.
The Engineering Freshmen Academy (ENGR 102) approaches engineering from a different perspective. It provides a macro-level view of the engineering profession by addressing the ethical, societal, and political impact of engineering. The class is not discipline specific so student will be able to work with student sfrom all fields of engineering. Additionally, each Academy section is assigned "Academy Coaches," upper division Viterbi students who serve as resources and mentors to first year students.
