Questions about Majors and Minors

> What do I do if I’m interested in a minor?

What is D Clearance? And how do I get D Clearance for my classes?
D Clearance (or Departmental Clearance) is placed on certain classes within the university. The most common D Clearances are found on major-related classes. D Clearance allows specific academic departments to reserve certain classes for certain students, as relevant to their major. Freshmen can receive D Clearance for their Engineering classes during their advising appointment with their FYE advisor. If students change their schedule, they will need to talk to their advisor about the changes and about any additional D Clearance they might need.

To receive D Clearance for any non-major related classes, such as GE's, minor classes, or courses of interest, students will need to contact the department directly.

Where or how do I obtain a D-clearance for ARCH 205a?

I haven’t set up an advising appointment yet, what should I do?
If you are a freshmen engineering student, please set up an advising appointment with your FYE advisor via myUSC. Click here to see a list of the FYE advisors and the majors they advise.

If you are a sophomore, junior, or senior engineering student please contact your department advisor to set up an appointment.

All current USC students who are seeking admission into the Viterbi School of Engineering should set up an appointment with a Viterbi advisor by emailing viterbi.studentservices@usc.edu. If you have any questions on advising and registration, please contact the Viterbi Admission & Student Affairs Office in RTH 110 or by emailing viterbi.studentservices@usc.edu.

I am registering for Honors Physics (PHYS 162), but I do not see it in the schedule of classes. What should I do?
PHYS 162 can be found under the PHYS 152 section of the schedule of classes. The lecture is section number 50452D and the quiz is section number 50453D. Students enrolling in PHYS 162 can choose from any of the PHYS 152 labs.

How do I know when my registration date and time is?
To view your registration appointment, please click on the Permit to Register, accessible via OASIS and myUSC. Your Permit to Register will give you the specific date and time when you can register for your classes. You can register for classes on your own computer or in a computer lab, by logging on to Web Registration. Please be sure you have scheduled an appointment with your advisor prior to registering for classes.

How do I get D Clearance for the Honors Colloquium (ENGR 100a,b,c,d)?
If you are registered for one of the Honors Colloquium courses, which puts you at 19 units the Viterbi Student Affairs office will cover the cost of the additional unit if all other units are academic units (ie: no PE classes). Students can pick up the reimbursement form in the RTH 110 lobby. Forms must be turned in by the end of the 3rd week of classes for the semester in which you are applying for the funding.

Before we can provide you clearance for higher level classes for fall 2010 you must have submitted a pre-approval request via OASIS, have confirmation that the course (s) you are intending to take are available this summer, and have a date of when you will register for the courses. Please note that you MUST adjust your schedule accordingly if you do not take courses over the summer.

What do I do if I’m interested in a minor?
If you are interested in a minor, please meet with a representative from the academic department which houses the minor to discuss the requirements and any admission criteria they might have. After obtaining the minor requirements, please speak to your FYE advisor to work out a course plan that incorporates your minor requirements. A list of minors is available in the Course Catalogue.
I am trying to register for a GE Category 6 class (social issues) or a Category 5 class (Arts & Letters) but the classes are full.
Enrollment for both category 6 and category 5 GEs are being managed by the College Advising Office, which means spaces will be opening up each week in the classes to ensure that as many students as possible have the opportunty to register for the courses.

Category 5: Additional seats in Category 5 will open up each day starting Monday, April 19 to Friday, April 23 and on Monday April 26. The maximum capacity for most Arts & Letters courses is 25 - 30 students.

Category 6: Additional seats in the Category 6 lectures will open on Monday, November 17th, Tuesday, November 18th, and Wednesday, November 19th. The maximum capacity for most Social Issue courses will be the total number of seats available in the course's discussion sections.

For additional information, please contact the College Adving Office in CAS 120 or at 213-740-2534.
I am trying to register for GE Category 5 (ARLT 100g) but I am receiving an error message.
This class is open to all freshmen and sophomores in their 1st or 2nd year at USC. If you get any type of error message on the web registration system, you can get clearance from the GE office in CAS 200 (2-story white building across from Taper Hall). The error just means you have a lot of AP units and just need an override to get into the class.

I'm trying to register for AME 201 and PHYS 152, but the class times conflict.
Unfortunately there is an overlap between one of the sections of AME 201 and the PHYS 152 quiz. You can register with an overlap by obtaining a pre-signed form at the Viterbi Student Affairs Office in RTH 110. Register online for all your classes except AME 201 and take the completed form to the Registration Office in REG where you will register for AME 201 in person.
I noticed that my AP/IB exams have not been calculated into my STARS report and/or Transfer Credit Report. What should I do?
First, contact Degree Progress (JHH 010) to confirm if your scores are on file. If they are on file, Degree Progress can upload them to your Transfer Credit Report. If your scores are not on file, you will need to contact the College Board and have your scores re-sent to the University. *Note: Please be sure your scores are sent to Degree Progress and not the Admission Office. Click here for Degree Progress’ mailing address.

What do I need to do to switch my major to another program within Viterbi?
If you are a current Viterbi student and wish to switch to a different program within Viterbi, please set up an appointment with your advisor or stop by RTH 110 for walk-ins, which are held Mon-Thurs from 1:30pm – 4:00pm. After speaking with an advisor, you can complete the Change of Major form available in RTH 110.
