Advisor and Student Responsibilities

 
Advisor’s Responsibilities
You can expect your Viterbi FYE advisor to:
 
  • Understand and effectively communicate curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
  • Introduce you to academic life at Viterbi.
  • Assist you in defining and developing realistic academic, professional and personal goals and encourage and support you as you gain skills to develop a plan to achieve these.
  • Help you connect to USC and Viterbi resources and services.
  • Provide you with information on academic activities and extra-curricular activities outside the classroom.
  • Encourage and guide you in gaining the skills to access and understand the resources and tools available via the Viterbi website (i.e. First Year Excellence), OASIS and Web Registration (both available through the myUSC portal) 
  • Be accessible for meetings via appointments, office hours, telephone or e-mail.
  • Monitor and accurately document your progress toward meeting your educational goals.
  • Assist you in gaining decision making skills and skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all FERPA regulations
  • Encourage and assist you in working closely with your professors.
  • Refer you to other campus offices as necessary.
  • Assist and guide your sophomore transition to your major department and encourage you to work closely with your major advisor.
 
Student Responsibilities
You are expected to see your freshmen advisor regularly and to schedule fall, spring and summer classes. In order to be an active participant in the advising process, you should take the following steps for successful collaboration with your advisor: 


Before each advising session:

        1) Review your academic flow-chart in the Viterbi Bulletin 
        2) Review your class schedule on Web Registration
        3) Complete ALL your required Advisment Forms

Bring to your advising session: 
        1) Completed Advisement Forms
        2) Any questions/concerns you would like to discuss

During your advising session:
        1) Clarify your personal values and goals and provide your advisor with accurate and truthful information. 
        2) Be honest and forthcoming about your class work, study habits, and progress to allow your advisor to make 
            adequate assessments and recommendations. 
 
Make it your priority to:
        1) Read your USC email and the weekly Viterbi Undergraduate Update (VUU) sent on Mondays.
        2) Review your STARS Report on OASIS each semester and track all graduation requirements.
        3) Become knowledgeable about and understand university programs, policies and procedures.
        4) Accept responsibility for your decisions and actions.
