Application Deadline: Friday, February 24, 2012

The Tsinghua Undergraduate Research Program provides an opportunity for an exchange of undergraduate students between the Viterbi School of Engineering and Tsinghua University to participate in research with faculty at each institution.

The program is funded by a contribution from Viterbi Alumnus, Feng Deng, who understands the importance of collaborative exchanges between two outstanding research institutions.

Participants in the program are expected to be flexible, adaptable, committed to academics and able to appreciate the unique differences of cultures in China. Students selected serve as ambassadors of USC and the Viterbi School and are expected to appreciate the honor bestowed upon them as awardees of this grant.

Program Details:

1. Program length is expected to be seven - eight weeks in length. Tentatively set tentatively from June 1 to July 24.

2. Students will be matched with current faculty at Tsinghua for available research projects based on the student’s academic background and potential research interests. It is not always possible to match those interests exactly, which requires selected students to be flexible in the assignments provided.

3. Students will be expected to spend six hours per day and 5 days a week working in the research lab with faculty.

4. Students will be housed on the Tsinghua campus in single rooms. These rooms are typical dormitory style rooms that students from Tsinghua as well as other visiting students will also occupy. Student rooms include a living room/bedroom combination and also include a separate bathroom, bed, desk, and internet connections. Kitchens are shared per dormitory floor and there are also 10 different cafeterias on the campus for student use.

5. Students will be expected to secure USC international health insurance for the duration of the program

6. Upon arrival students will be met at the airport and transported to the campus. Each student will also be assigned a current Tsinghua student as “partners” to assist them with check-in and becoming familiar with the campus.

7. Tsinghua staff and faculty will also host a welcome reception and a campus tour upon arrival. Students will also be included in any of the social activities planned by the respective laboratories to which they are assigned.

8. Students will receive stipends for housing and living expenses of approximately $3500. Total funds allocated to each student for airfare, housing and living expenses will total approximately $6,000 for the eight week period. Students will also be reimbursed for the cost of securing the appropriate visas from the Chinese Consulate.

9. Only complete applications will be considered.

10. At the end of program, selected students will be required to write a comprehensive research report outlining the research completed and their experiences.
