FAQs

Is VARC for only engineering students?
Yes, VARC services are only for engineering students, including pre-engineering students. Unfortunately we don’t have the staff to accommodate students from other departments, but USC has many other resources for students in departments outside of engineering. Check out the Center for Academic Support, the Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity, the Math Center, Supplemental Instruction, and the Writing Center.

How do I know if I need tutoring?
Nearly all of our students can benefit from some form of tutoring! Even our VARC tutors sign up for tutoring in classes they need help with. Tutoring is most beneficial if you come early in the semester and make tutoring a regular part of your study schedule – don’t wait until the day before your midterm to come in.

How can I prepare for a tutoring session?
Our advice is to start working on your assignment or studying for your test in advance of your appointment, so you can identify what you want to focus on during your session. Your session will be much more productive if you are prepared with specific topics to discuss with your tutor. Bring the following items to your session:

  • Homework assignment (already started)
  • Textbook(s)
  • Lecture notes
  • Course syllabus
  • Past tests
  • Your questions!

Do I have to make an appointment?
We recommend that you make an appointment, and you may book an appointment up to an hour ahead of the appointment start time. If tutors do not have any appointments, they can see you as a walk-in. So if you have a question, feel free to drop by! Keep in mind our busiest times are in the afternoons and evenings.

How often can I see a tutor?
You can schedule up to 2 hours a week with the same tutor.

Can I see a tutor on a regular basis?
Of course! Many students come to VARC on a weekly basis to see a specific tutor. Just be sure to book your appointments well in advance.

What if I can’t find an appointment time that fits in my schedule?
Tutors might able to meet with students outside of their regularly scheduled hours. In the online appointment system, we have a link that says “I am unable to make an appointment.” Click on that link and fill out the form. One of our tutors will then reply to arrange another time.

What if I have to cancel my appointment?
Please log into the online appointment system and cancel your appointment. You may cancel your appointment online up to 4 hours before your appointment time. If it is less than 4 hours before your appointment time, you need to contact VARC either by email (viterbi.varc@usc.edu) or phone (213.740.3881) to cancel.
