Archimedes Circle Award For Outstanding Scholarship The Archimedes Circle was a support group for the School of Engineering which did much to win the financial support of alumni and friends. The group was formed after the Olin Foundation Trustees visited the school in 1961 and were very critical of the school's poor record of alumni financial support. Then-Dean Ingersoll organized the formation of the support group, which was to be a $100-per-year support group. The group was named after Archimedes when Dean Ingersoll concurred that the contributions of Archimedes – the screws, levers, pulleys, catapults, and other machines – were more than sufficient to qualify him as “Mr. Classical Engineer”. He therefore proposed the name “Archimedes Circle” for the support group, connoting a circle of friends of the School and paying tribute to the geometrical figure used by Archimedes for his most important contributions to Engineering. The first Archimedes Circle Award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship was awarded in 1963. This award is based on the GPA earned at USC by a graduating student who has taken all or the majority of his/her work at USC and will graduate with a B.S. degree in spring or summer. Congratulations to Kelly Nakamura, winner of the 2008 Archimedes Circle Award for Outsanding Scholarship!
