Isaac

Sophomore

Class of 2012

B.S. Chemical (Biochemical) Engineering
Minor: Math

Hometown: Portland, OR

High School: Grant High School

What made you decide to attend USC: I decided to come to USC for a couple of reasons. The strong engineering program was a major factor. I also wanted to stay on the West Coast. I really like that USC is a big university with a small engineering school. I also appreciate strength of the Trojan Family (our alumni network), and USC sports.

Best experience/interaction with a professor: My Writing 140 teacher was really great. For each of our five major papers he scheduled individual conferences with every single student in the class. He gave me a lot of really good advice during those meetings. He also was willing to read sentences or paragraphs from my papers over email and help me with them.

Favorite Class: I really enjoyed physics with Professor Bickers. Physics isn’t my favorite subject, but Professor Bickers presented the material in a very comprehensible way. He was also really committed to helping students understand. He posted videos of solutions to many example problems online, and often stayed late in his office helping students with homework.

Involvements/extracurricular activities: Trojan Marching Band (2008-2009), Orientation Advisor (summer 2009), Viterbi Freshman Academy Coach, USC Tennis Club, Merit Research

Favorite on-campus event: Going to USC basketball games at the Galen Center and football games at the Coliseum. Both are right across the street from campus.

Best off-campus experience: I’ve gotten a chance to visit Santa Monica a number of times, and I really like exploring the beach and the rest of the city.

Favorite memory from freshman year: My first football game was Ohio State vs. USC in 2008. Both teams were ranked in the top 5 nationally, and I had a really amazing time.

What you like about being in LA: In the Northwest it rains a lot, so I like the weather here a lot. I also like being able to go to the beach.

Research/study abroad experience: I am starting to work in a molecular biology lab this year, and I hope to participate in Viterbi Summer Study Abroad in the future.

Hobbies/interests: I’m a really big sports fan. I like the Portland Trail Blazers a lot, and I also follow USC football and basketball pretty closely. I also like to play tennis a lot, read, and hang out with friends.
