Yoga with USC Alumna: Kathleen Sand
Thu, Oct 29, 2020 @ 09:30 AM - 10:30 AM
USC Viterbi School of Engineering
Receptions & Special Events
Instructor:
Kathleen Sand
Ph.D., Biomechanics, USC, 2004
Current: Senior Regional Director of Operations, CorePower Yoga
Kathleen (Kat) will guide you through a 60-minute all-levels, vinyasa yoga class. Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word, meaning "to place in a special way", or "to move with intention." Overtime, Vinyasa has grown to describe a style of yoga that can also be described as "flow" or "breath to movement." We will begin class with a few seated breathing exercises to connect with body and breath, and transition into a full-body yoga practice, ending with a bit of seated meditation. Kat's intention is to provide the time and space to connect you to your breath and your body; connect with friends and colleagues, either in-person or virtually; provide 60-minutes of decision-free time to focus solely on you; and to have fun as we explore layers of accessibility to achieve your personalized yoga practice.

WiSE Alumna Talk: A Journey from East to West
Thu, Oct 29, 2020 @ 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM
USC Viterbi School of Engineering
Receptions & Special Events
Speaker:
Shirin Faraji
Postdoctoral Scholar, Chemistry, USC, 2014-2016
Current: Associate Professor of Chemistry, University of Groningen
Abstract: Despite the considerable progress towards gender equality, an imbalance still persists in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Worldwide, more women graduate from universities than men, yet we remain an underrepresented minority in the STEM fields, including theoretical and computational chemistry. Even though a recent study by Holloway and McGaughey documents the rising tide of female participation and leadership in computational/theoretical chemistry community, awareness, caution, and actions remain vital for a sustained progress towards gender equality. In this presentation, I will share my experience in navigating the landscape of academic science, from my undergraduate studies in Tehran to my current position in Groningen, with an emphasis on changing challenges faced by women and the role of mentorship. Addressing the diversity in fundamental sciences is a long-term challenge, and I am happy to take it on, one step at a time, both by doing the science and doing something for science.
This event is for USC faculty, students, staff, and alumni.
