Please come to our workshops and Drop-in hours hosted by the USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity. No reservation or appointment is required for our workshops and drop-ins.
KCLC will be hosting Drop-in Hours and Skill Building for Success Workshops on Zoom with a weekly theme of time management, reading strategies, stress management or test-taking. The workshops will be interactive with great tips and resources.
This week, KCLC will be focusing on Stress Management Tips, understanding how you experience stress and exploring and practicing various ways to cope.
Drop-in hours are available for undergraduate or graduate students to meet with an academic coach without needing to make a reservation. These sessions may be held in a group setting, dependent upon staffing availability and demand.

Maymester courses will appear in the Spring 2022 Schedule of Classes, but are stand-alone Faculty-Led Program (FLP) offerings that provide exceptional opportunities for research and experiential learning off-campus, throughout the United States, or even abroad.

Talk Title: Black-box Adversarial Attacks for Deep Driving Maneuver Classification Models in Transportation CPS

Abstract: In a connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) scenario, each vehicle utilizes an onboard deep neural network (DNN) model to understand its received time-series driving signals (e.g., speed, brake status) from its nearby vehicles, and then takes necessary actions to increase traffic safety and roadway efficiency. In the scenario, an attacker may launch an adversarial attack, in which the attacker adds unnoticeable perturbation to the actual driving signals to fool the DNN model inside a victim vehicle to output a misclassified class to cause traffic congestion and/or accidents. Such an attack must be generated in near real-time and the adversarial perturbation is not noticeable in the current traffic context. However, previously proposed adversarial attacks fail to meet these requirements. To handle these challenges, we propose black-box adversarial attacks for time-series DNN models in the CAV scenarios. By analyzing real driving datasets, we observe driving signal patterns and features. Then, based on our observations, we design offline perturbations, which are used as a starting point in the online perturbation determination to generate the attacks. Our extensive experimental studies using two real driving datasets show that our proposed adversarial attacks require much shorter generation time and less perturbation amount than existing adversarial attacks.
Biography: Dr. Haiying (Helen) Shen is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Virginia. She received the 2015 IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC) Mid-career Award, the 2010 Microsoft Faculty Fellowship Award, the 2015 IBM Faculty Award, the 2013 NSF CAREER Award, and the 2013 Sigma Xi Clemson Chapter Young Investigator Award. Her research interests include Cyber-physical systems, Cloud computing and datacenters, Machine learning, Big data, and Distributed systems. Dr. Shen has made substantial contributions to her field with over 330 publications in prestigious conferences and journals such as Sigcomm'21, CoNext'20, Infocom'2011-2019, and IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (TON). Her papers received George N. Saridis best transactions paper award2021, the best paper awards in CloudCom2016 and NAS2018, best paper runner-up award in ICCCN2015, best paper award nominees in ICPP2021, MASS2011 and CCGrid2009, and best-in-session-presentation award in INFOCOM2017. She currently advises five Ph.D. students. She is an Associate Editor for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (TON), IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (TMC), IEEE Networking Letters (NL). She is also a program committee member of many leading conferences, and the former program co-chair and general co-chair for a number of international conferences.

Talk Title: Capillary Flows of Suspensions
Abstract: Interfacial flows of multiphase systems containing a dispersed solid or liquid phase occur in a broad range of manufacturing, environmental, and bioengineering processes. However, the classical capillary dynamics is strongly modified when the length scale of the liquid becomes comparable to the particle size. This configuration may lead to a failure of classical models based on a rheological approach. For instance, particles can destabilize thin-films, lead to defects in additive manufacturing, reduce transport efficiency, and result in the contamination of substrates.
In this talk, I will present some of our recent studies that characterize the role of interfaces in suspension dynamics. I will first describe the formation of a thin-film of suspension on a substrate to illustrate how the particles are entrained and deposited depending on the flow configuration and suspension properties. I will discuss how these results can be used to develop passive capillary filtering and sorting mechanisms. The second part of the talk will characterize how particles can modify the formation of droplets and the atomization of suspension sheets and ligaments. Our approach, bridging different length and time scales, describes how the bulk behavior and local heterogeneities contribute to the dynamics of multiphase capillary objects.
Biography: Alban Sauret is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. He graduated with a BS and an MS in Physics from ENS Lyon (France) and earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Aix-Marseille (France) in 2013. During his graduate studies, he was awarded a Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Fellowship from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University from 2013 to 2014 and then spent four years as a tenured CNRS Research Scientist in a joint academic and industrial laboratory, while also being a visiting research scholar at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He joined UC Santa Barbara in 2018. His research aims at understanding the dynamics of multiphase systems. He is particularly interested in the couplings between the fluid dynamics, interfacial effects, and particle transport mechanisms involved in environmental and industrial processes. Alban Sauret was named a Soft Matter Emerging Investigators in 2017, was elected a UC Regents Junior Faculty Fellow in 2019, and received the NSF CAREER Award in 2020. His past results were highlighted in various media, including the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Science Friday.
