    We hope you had a great summer! We have an exciting semester of data science activities and learning opportunities planned for you!

    Graduates Rising in Informatics and Data Science (GRIDS) is USC's premier student data science organization. We provide mentorship and experiential learning opportunities to students of all majors and backgrounds and invite them to be part of our strong interdisciplinary community of data science enthusiasts on campus. This semester GRIDS will be partnering with USC's Center for Knowledge-Powered Interdisciplinary Data Science (CKIDS) to work on a number of data science projects, host invited talks by leaders from academia and industry, and conduct workshops on topics in data science and Artificial Intelligence. To learn more about everything we have in store for this semester, come to our first meeting for this semester!

    The first GRIDS meeting of Fall 2020 will take place this Wednesday, September 2nd - details are provided below. If you are a returning GRIDS member or are interested in joining the organization, you are welcome to attend.

  • Code for Christ General Meeting

    Code for Christ is a Christ loving, bible believing, evangelically minded group of software developers.

    If you are a Christian developer who is interested in writing software to equip the saints for ministry, please consider joining Code for Christ.

    Our first meeting is this Wednesday night, September 2nd, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm PST. We will be presenting a short introduction to the club, current project, and future prospective projects.

    After the meeting, we will provide short, take-home instructions to help set up your development environment and will be available in the next meeting to help with any setup problems that could come up.

    Code for Christ is currently developing an app called Proverbs Box, which presents an easy way to browse the biblical Book of Proverbs, save verses, and set verse notifications.

    We will have weekly developer meetings on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 8:00pm PST, and optional fellowship/workshop meetings on Friday nights from 7:00pm to 8:00pm PST.

    Talk Title: Capturing the First Image of a Black Hole and Designing the Future of Black Hole Imaging

    Abstract: The Math Department is having a talk on Friday, September 11 at 330PM PST and invites the CS community to attend.

    This talk will present the methods and procedures used to produce the first image of a black hole from the Event Horizon Telescope, as well as discuss future developments for black hole imaging. It had been theorized for decades that a black hole would leave a "shadow" on a background of hot gas. Taking a picture of this black hole shadow would help to address a number of important scientific questions, both on the nature of black holes and the validity of general relativity. Unfortunately, due to its small size, traditional imaging approaches require an Earth-sized radio telescope. In this talk, I discuss techniques the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration has developed to photograph a black hole using the Event Horizon Telescope, a network of telescopes scattered across the globe. Imaging a black hole's structure with this computational telescope required us to reconstruct images from sparse measurements, heavily corrupted by atmospheric error. The talk will also discuss future developments, including new imaging techniques and how we are developing machine learning methods to help design future telescope arrays.

    Next up in MEGA's Student Speaker Series is Sheehan Ahmed with Left On Read and the European Bug! Watch the live presentation on Zoom this Friday, September 18 at 5:00 PM PST to learn about Ahmed's experience as an engineer working on Left On Read, a choice-driven narrative platformer where you play as a college freshman texting your crush. During the creation of Left On Read, Ahmed and his team discovered a bug that only affected European players, leaving them hardstuck at the beginning of the game.

    Sheehan Ahmed is currently a sophomore at USC pursuing a degree in Interactive Media and Games. Released in May 2020 and with over 200,000 downloads, Left On Read is a quarantine-inspired game about the harsh realities of modern-age communication. In Learning How to Teach How to Learn, Josh discusses the process of designing the tutorial level for the Intermediate Game Project Fade Away.     Abstract:
    Clients' performance is important for both Content-Delivery Networks (CDNs) and the Domain Name System (DNS). Operators would like the service to meet expectations of their users. CDNs providing stable connections will prevent users from experiencing downloading pause from connection breaks. Users expect DNS traffic to be secure without being intercepted or injected. Both CDN and DNS operators care about a short network latency, since users can become frustrated by slow replies.

    Many CDNs and DNS services (such as the DNS root) use IP anycast to bring content closer to users. Anycast-based services announce the same IP address(es) from globally distributed sites. In an anycast infrastructure, Internet routing protocols will direct users to a nearby site naturally. The path between a user and an anycast site is formed on a hop-to-hop basis---at each hop (a network device such as a router), routing protocols like Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) makes the decision about which next hop to go to. ISPs at each hop will impose their routing policies to influence BGP's decisions. Without globally knowing (also unable to modify) the distributed information of BGP routing table of every ISP on the path, anycast infrastructure operators are unable to predict and control in real-time which specific site a user will visit and what the routing path will look like. Also, any change in routing policy along the path may change both the path and the site visited by a user. We refer to such minimal control over routing towards an anycast service, the uncertainty of anycast routing. Using anycast spares extra traffic management to map users to sites, but can operators provide a good anycast-based service without precise control over the routing?

    This routing uncertainty raises three concerns: routing can change, breaking connections; uncertainty about global routing means spoofing can go undetected, and lack of knowledge of global routing can lead to suboptimal latency. In this thesis, we show how we confirm the stability, how we confirm the security, and how we improve the latency of anycast to answer these three concerns. First, routing changes can cause users to switch sites, and therefore break a stateful connection such as a TCP connection immediately. We study routing stability and demonstrate that connections in anycast infrastructure are rarely broken by routing instability. Of all vantage points (VPs), fewer than 0.15% VP's TCP connections frequently break due to timeout in 5s during all 17 hours we observed. We only observe such frequent TCP connection break in 1 service out of all 12 anycast services studied. A second problem is DNS spoofing, where a third-party can intercept the DNS query and return a false answer. We examine DNS spoofing to study two aspects of security---integrity and privacy, and we design an algorithm to detect spoofing and distinguish different mechanisms to spoof anycast-based DNS. We show that DNS spoofing is uncommon, happening to only 1.7% of all VPs, although increasing over the years.Among all three ways to spoof DNS---injections, proxies, and third-party anycast site (prefix hijack), we show that third-party anycast site is the least popular one. Last, diagnosing poor latency and improving the latency can be difficult for CDNs. We develop a new approach, BAUP (bidirectional anycast unicast probing), which detects inefficient routing with better routing replacement provided. We use BAUP to study anycast latency. By applying BAUP and changing peering policies, a commercial CDN is able to significantly reduce latency, cutting median latency in half from 40ms to 16ms for regional users.
