Daniel Marcu leads ISI’s strategic initiatives, which include exploration of emerging technical themes and new engagement models across ISI. His own research focuses on large-scale natural language processing, including discourse processing, education, language generation, machine learning, machine translation, semantics and text summarization.
Marcu has previously transitioned advanced research concepts into commercial software used by more than 100 million people. He co-founded and was chief technology officer of Language Weaver, which provided trusted, automated translation to corporate and government customers around the globe. Marcu became chief science officer for Language Weaver’s acquirer, technology and services provider SDL plc., which aims to optimize global customer experience. A fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics, Marcu had been affiliated part-time with ISI prior to becoming director of strategic initiatives in 2014. He earned his PhD in computer science at the University of Toronto.
