Message from the Chairs
USC began teaching electrical engineering more than a century ago, when the field was widely considered a subset of physics. Today our work is vitally important and critical to the advancement of the information age. As the USC Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering charges into its second century of excellence, we are defining the forefront of research in a number of important areas. These include ultra-low power electronics; embedded systems; computing and/or sensing networks; internet of things; computer architecture; computer-aided design; control systems; signal, image and multimedia processing; nanotechnology; post-Moore computing devices; photonics; technology-enabled healthcare; energy harvesting; and quantum information processing. We are proud to claim Qualcomm and Linkabit co-founder Andrew J. Viterbi as a faculty member; the engineering school bears his name. In 2006, electrical engineering alumnus Ming Hsieh named our department. Hsieh has a storied history in industry as a cofounder and CEO of Cogent, Inc. Fourteen National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members including Alan Willner who was elected to NAE in 2016 call our department home. Recently, Andy Molisch and Krishna Nayak were elected to be fellows of National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), respectively, while Ellis Meng became a fellow of IEEE. We're proud of our department's distinguished history and our vital and innovative faculty. Please take a few minutes to explore some of the highlights of their work.
