Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Spring 2023 newsletter for the USC Viterbi Alfred E. Mann Department of Biomedical Engineering.
I am honored to commence my role as the new chair of this department, with its fantastic community of faculty, staff, students and alumni. Launched in 1976, ours is one of the nation's oldest biomedical engineering departments. USC's BME department was a pioneer in neural engineering, medical devices and diagnostics, modeling and analysis, and cellular and molecular bioengineering. We have a long history of innovations spanning bionic vision, implantable devices to restore memory, precision medicine, the development of new medical treatments, and much more.
We are at the start of a dynamic new era for biomedical engineering at USC thanks to one of the nation's largest-ever naming gifts to a BME department. The Alfred E. Mann Foundation's $35 million gift will enable us to build our research capacity, attract leading faculty members and strengthen our ties with the Keck School of Medicine of USC as well as the Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Recent months have seen numerous exciting developments and achievements in the department. We announced a new $11.7 million USC center to create open-source implantables for the nervous system, and many of our faculty members and research students have recently received prestigious grants and honors.
Learn more about our exciting research, groundbreaking innovation, outstanding faculty, and talented students. We hope you enjoy these recent highlights from our department.
