On November 14, 2011, the Ming Hsieh Institute (MHI) in USC Viterbi’s Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering sponsored an Electrical Engineering Bay Area Alumni Reception at the Fairmont San Jose. Around 60 Trojan alums attended, representing companies such as Cisco, Juniper Networks, Netlogic Microsystems, Nvidia and Oracle, among others.

During the event, MHI Director Shri Narayanan gave an overview of MHI’s goals and talked about the importance of staying connected with the department by attending events, providing career stories and mentoring current students. Electrical Engineering Department Chairs Sandy Sawchuk and Eun Sok Kim were in attendance and gave brief remarks about the department and its goals for the near future. Local alums David Lane of ONSET Ventures and Sujata Banerjee, Distinguished Technologist for HP Labs, shared as well, telling their own career stories and what they would like to see happen as electrical engineering moves forward.
Over the course of the event, alums shared their fond memories of USC Viterbi. Alum David Kyser (PhD ’67), who holds season tickets for the football team, takes frequent trips to campus; while Sukrutha Raman Bhadouria (MS ’07) expressed her appreciation for USC’s dedicated professors, mentioning her memorable experience trying to get into one of Professor Bhaskar Krishnamachari’s classes (Krishnamachari is Co-Director of MHI).
Alums enjoyed the opportunity to meet and network with each other, expressing interest in future events elaborating on current research, so as to better absorb new graduates into their areas of interest and expertise. Opportunities for future collaboration and possible internships were also mentioned. MHI plans to host additional alumni events soon in Los Angeles and San Diego.
