February 22, 2012 —

Naj Meshkati, professor of civil and environmental engineering as well as industrial and systems engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, studies risk reduction in large-scale industrial systems, including public transportation.

In the wake of the 2008 Metrolink crash in Chatsworth, Meshkati and other Viterbi professors collaborated with Metrolink to study the history of past rail disasters in the hope of preventing future ones. Meshkati focuses on human error, organizational failures and safety cultures.

Of the Argentine disaster, Meshkati said; “This looks very similar to other accidents I have studied. Unfortunately, accidents where a train hits a station happen all around the world.”

Meshkati can be reached at (213) 740-8765 or meshkati@usc.edu.
