The Ming Hsieh Institute kicked off a brand new seminar series entitled “The Electrical Engineering Pioneer Series” on May 2nd with its first featured EE Pioneer, Robert (Bob) Scholtz, the Fred H. Cole Professor of Engineering and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Scholtz has been with the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering since 1963 and has served the department as an
exemplary mentor and leader for the past 51 years.

To begin the event, Scholtz delivered a technical talk titled “Synchronization Dreams” to a room of more than 70 attendees, and then took part in an oral history conversation with Electrical Engineering Professor Urbashi Mitra.

Scholtz recounted stories ranging from his childhood days to meeting his wife for the first time, and ultimately about what led him to the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at USC Viterbi.

“I thought about being an architect, but I could sort of understand architecture, and I didn’t know anything about electricity so I said, ‘Let’s study electrical engineering,’” said Scholtz when recounting his reasons for selecting electrical engineering as his area of specialty.

The EE Pioneer series was created as a means to document the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering’s history. This new seminar series focuses its attention on the stories and journeys of the many faculty who have been a crucial part of the growth and evolution of the department over the last several decades.

“Documenting these stories is of great importance to the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering,” said Shri Narayanan, Director of the Ming Hsieh Institute. “In remembering where we’ve been and the paths we have traversed, we can begin to charter where we are going.”

The Ming Hsieh Institute will host its second EE Pioneer Series Seminar with Professor Solomon Golomb during the Ming Hsieh Institute’s Annual Research Festival held in the fall of 2014.
