This examination normally focuses on the topic's importance, its relevance to the field and the literature, how the topic advances to the frontier of knowledge, what methods will be used to attack the problem, and anticipated results. Upon passing the qualifying examination, the student advances from the status of PhD aspirant to PhD candidate, and proceed to execute the program of research that will be documented in his or her dissertation.This special joint session of ENGR 502, Writing Skills for Engineering PhD Students, and ENGR 503, Oral Communication Skills for Engineering PhD Students is offered once a year. All pre-qualification Viterbi School doctoral students are invited to attend. Student Health Council PresentsMary Beth Formby, Chief Financial Officer of Lakewood Regional Medical Center Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 6:00 PM, RGL Room 308Mary Beth Formby has an extensive health care financial background, and has held CFO positions for the past ten years. She was awarded the Tenet "Outstanding CFO" twice (2002 and 2003). She has managed financial turn around of Irvine Regional Hospital while completing systems conversions and integration of major managed care plan. While managing a facility being sold, she exceeded financial targets and kept the facility viable before and after the sale. Additionally, she has been selected as CFO for panel presentation at Tenet's National HR Conference in 2001. Kennedy School, Harvard UniversityABSTRACT: Infrastructure policy in the US appears to be at an impasse. On the one hand, most experts agree that we need to invest more in highways and other forms of infrastructure. On the other hand, the public has been reluctant to increase gas taxes, tolls or otherwise increase infrastructure funding. Some have argued that private provision of highways can help break the impasse by tapping private financing or providing the political cover to raise tolls or taxes. But these are not very compelling reasons to have private highways. The more compelling reason is if the private operation can reduce real costs or provide a better quality of service.BIO: Jose A. Gomez-Ibanez is the Derek C. Bok Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy at Harvard University, where he holds a joint appointment at the Graduate School of Design and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. He teaches courses in economics, infrastructure and transportation policy in both schools. Professor Gomez-Ibanez research interests are in transportation, infrastructure, and economic development, and he has authored or edited a half dozen books including:Regulating Infrastructure: Monopoly, Contracts and Discretion (Harvard University Press, 2003);

Vantage Oncology is a venture backed, very rapidly growing healthcare services company in a critical medical sector. Mr. Fiore joined Vantage Oncology as its Chairman and CEO in 2002 and has more than eleven years of experience in the development and operation of cancer treatment facilities including radiation therapy. He was the COO of Salick Health Care, a publicly traded cancer services company with over 30 sites, and the former president of its cancer center subsidiary. Under his direction, Salick's revenue reached approximately $200 million prior to its sale to Zeneca in 1997 for $450 million. MATHEMATICAL FINANCE COLLOQUIUMSpeaker: Nizar TouziEcole Polytechnique, Paris, FranceAbstract: We suggest a probabilistic numerical scheme for fully nonlinear PDEs as a natural combination of Monte Carlo and finite differences. In the semilinear case, this scheme corresponds to the Monte Carlo scheme suggested by the representation of the solution in terms of backward stochastic differential equations. Our first main result provides the convergence of the discrete-time approximation and derives a bound on the discretization error in terms of the time step. An explicit implementable scheme requires to approximate the conditional expectation operators involved in the discretization. This induces a further Monte Carlo error. Our second main result is to prove the convergence of the latter approximation scheme, and to derive an
upper bound on the approximation error. Numerical experiments are performed for the approximation of the

WHAT: The USC Health Care Business Club presents an evening with USC undergraduate alumnus R. Scott Huennekens, the President and CEO of Volcano Corporation. Huennekens will discuss the process of taking a company public as well as the place medical devices and medical device companies have in saving lives.Volcano develops and manufactures products for minimally invasive treatment of atherosclerosis in the coronary and peripheral arteries. The market potential for products Volcano is selling and developing is over $2 billion.Huennekens started as the company's 11th employee, and has led Volcano from a pre-revenue start-up to its IPO in June 2006, which included raising more than $200 million of private and public equity. The company now has more than 1,000 employees and over 800 million in market capitalization. Volcano's stock was the No. 1 performing Med Tech IPO of 2006 and is up approximately 100% since its IPO. Volcano's current revenue run rate is over $200 million and has been growing at a rate in excess of 30% per year. The company's revenues are global in nature with about 50% in the U.S. and 50% outside the U.S.WHO: Scott Huennekens has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Volcano Corporation and Chairman of the Board of Directors since April 2002.
