EPSTEIN DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING SEMINARTitle: "Time Decomposition of a Maritime Inventory Routing Problem"Speaker: Alejandro Toriello, PhD Candidate, School of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of TechnologyABSTRACT: We present a time decomposition of a maritime inventory routing problem motivated by collaboration with ExxonMobil Research & Engineering. The model includes characteristics not commonly seen in inventory routing, and our framework is general and adaptable to many dynamic operational settings. The methodology is based on valuing inventory with a concave piecewise linear function and then combining solutions to single-period subproblems using dynamic programming techniques. Numerical results show that the resulting value function accurately captures the inventory's value, and we drastically decrease computational time without sacrificing solution quality. Signal processing techniques for the mixed-signal circuit designer

Sudhakar Pamarti - UCLAAbstract: Mixed-signal circuits are critical components in most electronic systems. Aggressive integrated circuit technology scaling has placed on them both tremendous performance demands and severe challenges such as transistor non-linearity, process variability etc. This talk will present a choice selection of signal processing techniques that exploit the relative abundance of inexpensive digital logic to overcome the aforementioned challenges and enable high performance in mixed-signal circuits. Specifically, techniques that "condition" the statistical properties of signals being processed by the mixed-signal circuits, making them inherently immune to circuit imperfections, will be described. Example applications to frequency synthesizers, power amplifiers, and wired communication transceivers will be presented.Biography: Sudhakar Pamarti is an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he teaches and conducts research in the fields of mixed-signal circuit design and signal processing. Dr. Pamarti received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at San Diego in 1999 and 2003, respectively, and the Bachelor of Technology degree in electronics and electrical communications engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1995. Prior to joining UCLA, he has worked at Rambus Inc. ('03-`05) and Hughes Software Systems ('95-`97) developing real-time, embedded software and firmware for a wireless-in-local-loop communication system. Dr. Pamarti is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award. He currently serves on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II.

Jing Guo - University of FloridaAbstract: In recent years, significant progress has been achieved in graphene and carbon nanotube
(CNT) electronics. In a graphene or carbon nanotube, low bias transport can be nearly ballistic.
Deposition of high-ê gate insulators does not degrade the carrier mobility because of an absence of
dangling bonds. The conduction and valence bands are symmetric, which is advantageous for
complementary applications. The Excellent transport property promises high-speed transistor
applications. Carbon-based nanostructures are receiving much attention for possible device applications.
We have developed a self-consistent atomistic simulator for graphene and CNT field-effect transistors
(FETs) based on the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism, and applied it to understand
and explain experiments. The simulator provides an atomistic scale description for quantum transport in
the presence of inelastic scattering and electron-photon interaction. We show that CNTFET is capable of
delivering a near ballistic DC on-current even under high source-drain bias conditions. The radio
frequency (RF) characteristics of CNTFETs are simulated for understanding potential high-speed
transistor applications. On graphene electronics, we show that edge chemistry of graphene nanoribbons
(GNRs) provides promising opportunities to engineer the device properties. Device physics and design
options of GNR-based tunneling transistors are also examined by atomistic device simulations.Biography: Jing Guo received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, West
Lafayette, IN, and subsequently joined University of Florida as an assistant professor in Aug. 2004. His
research interests focus on modeling and simulation of nanoscale devices with applications in electronics and
optoelectronics, in close collaboration with experimentalists. He has published over sixty peer-reviewed
journal papers on prestigious journals including Science, Nature, Phys. Rev. Lett., Nano Lett., Appl. Phys.
Lett., Nature Nanotechnology, and IEEE Transactions. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation
(NSF) Faculty Early CAREER Award, and served in the technical program committee of International
Electron Device Meeting (IEDM) and Device Research Conference (DRC). He is the coauthor of the book,

EPSTEIN DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING SEMINARTitle: "Reducing Operating Room Labor Costs: Capturing Workload Information & Dynamic Adjustments of Staffing Level"Speaker: Polly Biyu He, PhD Candidate, Graduate School of Business, Stanford UniversityABSTRACT: We study the problem of setting nurse staffing levels in hospital operating rooms when there is uncertainty about the daily workload. We develop empirical models to predict the daily workload distribution and study how its mean and variance change with the information available. In particular, we consider different information sets available at the time of decision: no information, information on number of cases, and information on number and types of elective cases. We use these models to derive optimal staffing rules based on historical data from a US teaching hospital and prospectively test the performance of these rules. Our empirical results suggest that hospitals could potentially reduce their staffing costs by an average of 39-49% (depending on the absence or presence of emergency cases) by deferring the staffing decision until procedure-type information is available. However, in reality, contractual and scheduling constraints often require operating room managers to reserve staffed hours several months in advance, when little information about the cases is known. This motivates us to consider the problem of adjusting the staffing level given information updates. Specifically, we develop decision models that allow the OR manager to adjust the staffing level with some adjustment costs when he or she has better information. We study how adjustment costs affect the optimal staffing policy and the value of having the flexibility to adjust staffing. Yang, Chancellor, University of California Santa BarbaraHenry T. Yang joined UC Santa Barbara as chancellor and professor of mechanical engineering in 1994. He teaches an undergraduate engineering course every year, and is currently guiding four Ph.D. students with support from National Science Foundation grants. He was formerly the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, where he also served as the dean of engineering for ten years, and as director of the Computer Integrated Design, Manufacturing, and Automation Center.Dr. Yang has authored or co-authored more than 170 articles for scientific journals, guided 52 Ph.D. theses, and received 13 outstanding undergraduate teaching awards, including an honorary distinguished teaching award from UCSB's Academic Senate. His book Finite Element Structural Analysis, published by Prentice-Hall, has been adopted by many universities and has also been published in Japanese and Chinese editions.He has served on scientific advisory boards for various government agencies. He is currently serving as the chair of the Association of American Universities and the vice chair of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering's Aerospace Engineering Peer Committee, the Kavli Foundation Board, and the Millennium Technology Prize Selection Committee, and is chairman of the board for the Thirty Meter Telescope project. In 2009 he was appointed to the President's Committee for the National Medal of Science.Dr. Yang has received a number of recognitions for his research, teaching, and public service, including the Benjamin Garver Lamme gold medal and five honorary doctorates. In 2008, he was awarded the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of AIAA,
ASEE, and ASME.
