Talk Title: Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning System Safety Seminar
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning is with us today. It is increasing exponentially throughout the systems that serve our national interests and infrastructure. We need to ensure that these AI systems operate within the bounds for which they are designed.
This one day seminar pre-course presents the processes and standards by which engineers and program managers and senior leadership can ensure that Artificial Intelligence will operate as designed and intended. It introduces the full 4.5 day USC AI/ML course that will be presented in the Fall of 2021. The seminar directly addresses two of the objectives of the DoD AI Educational Strategy of 2020: to "Prioritize AI awareness for senior leaders" and to "Create a cadre of Integrated Product Teams (IPT's)."
Aerospace and advanced weapon systems are certified for acceptance in accordance with Military Standard 882 (System Safety). This seminar utilizes Mil Std 882 as the basis for the concepts, processes and certification standards that should be used to ensure the safety and integrity of AI/ML systems. The course presents the five levels of autonomy and their corresponding levels of human interface.
There is no fee. It is a complimentary seminar.
A full 4.5 day course will be presented in the Fall of 2021. Date not yet specified.

Abstract: Dr. Smilowitz will discuss connections between evolving issues in public education and advances in optimization, computing and geographic information systems, beginning with early work motivated by Supreme Court decisions to desegregate schools. The talk will end with a reflection on current issues facing public school districts, including school busing and return-to-school plans amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ways in which operations research can be part of these discussions.

Biography: Dr. Karen Smilowitz is the James N. and Margie M. Krebs Professor in Industrial Engineering and Management Science at Northwestern University, with a joint appointment in the Operations group at the Kellogg School of Management. Dr. Smilowitz is an expert in modeling and solution approaches for logistics and transportation systems in both commercial and non-profit applications, working with transportation providers, logistics specialists and a range of non-profit organizations. Dr. Smilowitz is the founder of the Northwestern Initiative on Humanitarian and Non-Profit Logistics. She has been instrumental in promoting the use of operations research within the humanitarian and nonproï¬t sectors through the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Engineering, as well as various media outlets. Dr. Smilowitz is Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Science. Dr. Smilowitz received the Award for the Advancement of Women in OR/MS from INFORMS and led the winning team in the INFORMS Innovative Applications of Analytics Award.

Talk Title: Automated Vehicles -- Current Status and Remaining Challenges

Abstract: Automated vehicles are being actively developed and are beginning to appear on production vehicles at a fast pace. In the meantime, self-driving or autonomous vehicles are being introduced in pilot programs in many cities in the US.
In this talk, the current status of automated vehicles and their remaining challenges will be introduced. We will also introduce some of the research and development work at the University of Michigan.
Biography: Huei Peng received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. He is now a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the Director of Mcity, which studies connected and autonomous vehicle technologies and promotes their deployment. His research interests include adaptive control and optimal control, with emphasis on their applications to vehicular and transportation systems. His current research focuses include design and control of electrified vehicles, and connected/automated vehicles.
In the last 10 years, he was involved in the design of several military and civilian concept vehicles, including FTTS, FMTV, Eaton/Fedex, and Super-HUMMWV--for both electric and hydraulic hybrid concepts. He served as the US Director of the DOE sponsored Clean Energy Research Center--Clean Vehicle Consortium, which supports more than 30 research projects related to the development of clean vehicles. He has more than 300 technical publications, including 150 in referred journals and transactions and four books. Huei Peng has been an active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is both an SAE fellow and an ASME Fellow.

Talk Title: Probing Phase Transformations and Twinning Across Length Scales Using 3D X-Ray Microscopy
Abstract: Advanced materials are broadly defined as innovative materials that have atypical sizes, microstructures, and responses. These atypical characteristics enable major, previously impossible technological breakthroughs, yet many advanced materials owe their desirable properties to complex underlying micromechanics including twinning, detwinning, and martensitic phase transformations. Establishing the relationships between these local micromechanics and macroscopic material behavior is critical to accelerating the implementation of advanced materials. Toward these goals, we utilize modern 3D X-ray diffraction techniques that offer the capability to measure the deformation and microstructure evolution inside bulk materials, in situ, and across nine orders of magnitude in length scales (nm to mm). Measured quantities include the 3D microstructure map and spatially-resolved crystallographic orientation, elastic strain tensor, and phase fraction. These techniques can be used to simultaneously measure local microstructure events and the consequent macroscopic response, resulting in a tool uniquely suited for linking local micromechanics to material behavior. These capabilities will be illustrated using a number of research examples involving twinning and phase-transforming materials, using nickel-titanium shape memory alloys as a model material system. Ongoing and future work will also be discussed, including the development of a first-of-its kind laboratory-scale instrument to conduct 3D X-ray diffraction experiments in-house.
Biography: Ashley Bucsek is an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Previously, she was a President's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Minnesota and a visiting scientist on beamline ID06 at the ESRF. She holds an MS and PhD from Colorado School of Mines and a BSE from the University of Wyoming. Bucsek's research combines 3D X-ray diffraction microscopy with micromechanical theory to study deformation and microstructure evolution in structural and functional materials. She is a regular user at the APS, CHESS, and the ESRF and is currently developing a laboratory-scale high energy diffraction microscopy microscope. Bucsek is also a board member on the ASM International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies, an editorial advisory board member of the Shape Memory and Superelasticity journal, an APS Imaging/Microbeam proposal review panel member, and a member of the DOE-funded PRISMS Center,
