Title: Improving User Experience on Today's Internet via Innovation in Internet Routing
In this dissertation, I examine how content distribution networks (CDNs) interconnect and route traffic on today's Internet, along with the opportunities and challenges that arise in this environment. By executing measurement studies and building control systems, I demonstrate that the flattening of the Internet gives way to solutions to longstanding Internet problems. In addition, I discuss how I democratized Internet routing research by building PEERING, a platform that enables researchers to execute experiments that interact with the Internet routing ecosystem. PEERING has been used by members of the Internet routing research community to execute over 40 experiments, many of which were previously considered infeasible. Through this work, I demonstrate that it is possible to build novel solutions to longstanding Internet routing problems and ultimately improve user experience by combining the rich interconnectivity of CDNs in today's flattened Internet with mechanisms to delegate BGP's decision process.

CAIS++ Spring 2021 Projects Showcase
Thu, Apr 22, 2021 @ 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM
Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science
Student Activity
We are CAIS++, the undergraduate branch of USC's Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society (CAIS). Our mission is to advance AI for Social Good, and our group of 150+ students has worked with professors, startups, and community organizations to develop cutting-edge AI solutions for societal problems.
We're inviting you to our Spring 2021 Projects Showcase on Thursday, April 22 from 6:00-7:00 pm on Zoom (link below). Our student teams will be presenting the AI projects that they have worked on this semester.
Projects from this semester include developing machine learning approaches for
Estimating the pandemic risk potential of a virus from genome sequences
Tracing knowledge concept acquisition for personalized education
Diagnosing early-onset dementia from speech patterns
Implementing embedded computer vision algorithms
Predicting the spread of forest fires
We will be recruiting a new cohort of undergraduates in Fall 2021, so coming to our showcase is a great way to learn about CAIS++ and see the type of work we do!
