CENG SEMINAR SERIES"Data Mining in Large-Scale Distributed Systems"Prof. Assaf SchusterComputer Science DepartmentTECHNION - Israel Institute of TechnologyAbstract:In this talk, we present a general methodology for computing and mining data in large-scale distributed networks. Central to our approach are algorithms that output ad hoc results. These results are accurate because the changes in the global database are usually stationary. Another key idea is the development of super-scalable distributed algorithms for rather simple primitives. The high scalability is achieved by means of local computing, a method which also implies anytime computing, incrementality, and robustness. The scalable primitives then become building blocks for higher-level and more complicated data mining goals through correct and efficient composition, which also preserves locality. The talk will focus on peer-to-peer networks, where the recent trends of e-economy, dropping storage prices, and increased connectivity, allow peers to collect and share huge volumes of valuable data, previously available only to corporations. We show how our methodology can be used to devise efficient algorithms that can be employed in peer-to-peer networks to meet challenges such as association rule mining and facility location.Bio:Associate Professor Assaf Schuster (http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~assaf,) received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since being awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1991 he has been with the Computer Science Department at the Technion—the Israel Institute of Technology. His current research interests include Grid Systems, Peer-to-Peer Networks, Large-Scale Distributed Data Mining, and other challenges in the distributed, parallel and high-performance arena. He established and heads the Distributed Systems and Data Mining Laboratory (DSL) at the Technion (http://dsl.cs.technion.ac.il).Host: Prof. Viktor Prasanna, x04483 http://engineering.usc.edu/calendar/

  • A Distributed Authentication Scheme for a Wireless Sensing System

    Thu, Jun 30, 2005 @ 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

CENG SEMINAR SERIES"A Distributed Authentication Scheme for a Wireless Sensing System"Prof. Hyunyoung LeeDepartment of Computer ScienceUniversity of DenverAbstract:Wireless sensor technologies are becoming more efficient and smaller in size and as a result, they are becoming more widely used for a variety of applications. However, due to their limited computational, energy, and storage resources, these devices can only perform relatively simple tasks. Furthermore, implementing strong security in sensor networks has often been disregarded because most common cryptographic schemes are too expensive. Nonetheless, sensor networks may often relay critical data, thus, security must be a high priority. We propose a novel distributed authentication scheme that is efficient and robust using the well-known concepts of "secret sharing" cryptography and group "consensus." We prove that our scheme is well-suited to the resource-deprived nature of networked sensing systems and demonstrate that it requires a minimal message and bit complexity.Bio:Hyunyoung Lee received her Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University, M.A. from Boston University, M.S. and B.S. from Ewha University in South Korea, in 2001, 1998, 1992, and 1987, respectively, all in Computer Science. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Denver. She is a member of the IEEE and the ACM. She was a Member of Technical Staff at Korean Air, and a consultant at Bellcore (now Telcordia). Her areas of research include distributed systems and algorithms, wireless networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and fault-tolerant computing.Host: Prof. Michel Dubois, Ext. 04475
