Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Prof. Vawter began teaching officially at ITP in 1996 and currently focuses on SAP.

Center for Energy Nanoscience and Technology Distinguished Speaker Series
Fri, Jun 10, 2011 @ 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Conferences, Lectures, & Seminars
Speaker: Joseph Ford, Professor, University of California, San Diego
Talk Title: Planar Micro-Optic Waveguide Solar Concentrators
Abstract: Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) systems focus sunlight onto high-efficiency photovoltaic cells, using gross mechanical tracking to keep the lenses aligned to the sun's position as it moves across the sky, with optics whose basic structure has been used since the 1930s. This talk will describe research at UCSD's Photonic Systems Integration Lab on a very different approach to CPV, using micro-optics and a planar waveguide to couple light into the PV cell, where all the optics are designed to be fabricated with inexpensive roll processing. The presentation will show the optical system design and early experimental results for the planar concentrator, as well as some complex planar structures that allow high-concentraton and spectrally-banded systems, which show promise for lowering the costs for mechanically tracked CPV systems. However, the physical structure of this concentrator also allows some unconventional approaches to tracking. The talk will show preliminary research results for two new directions in CPV, where the large-scale and precise mechanical motion in conventional tracking systems may be replaced with either a micro-mechanical translation of the lenses relative to the waveguide (micro-tracking), or using special materials which react to incident sunlight to cause the effect of tracking without any physical motion (reactive tracking).
Biography: Joseph Ford is a Professor of ECE at the University of California San Diego and a fellow of the Optical Society of America. At UCSD, he leads the Photonics Systems Integration Lab, a research group doing advanced free-space optical system design, prototyping and characterization for a range of applications. Current research projects involve gigapixel imaging systems, telephoto vision systems, and efficient concentrator-based photovoltaic systems. Dr. Ford received a M.S. in Optical Engineering from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of California San Diego. Dr. Ford was a member of Bell Labs Advanced Photonics Research Department from 1994 to 2000, where he developed MEMS and optoelectronic components including the first MEMS spectral equalizer and wavelength add/drop switch, technologies now in widespread use worldwide. In 2000 he joined Optical Micro-Machines, becoming Chief Scientist in 2001 before joining UCSD in 2002. Dr. Ford was General Co-Chair of the first IEEE Conference on Optical MEMS in 2000, and General Co-Chair for the 2008 Optical Fiber Communications Conference. Dr. Ford is co-author of over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings and inventor on more than 45 United States patents in communications, imaging, and solar energy.

Understanding the Complex Flow of Extreme Ocean Waves Interacting with the Built Environment
Wed, Jun 15, 2011 @ 02:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Conferences, Lectures, & Seminars
Speaker: Patrick Joseph Lynett, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Coastal & Ocean Engineering Division, Texas A&M University
Abstract: This presentation will summarize recent field work, physical modeling, and numerical studies of ocean wave evolution in shallow water and the interaction of these waves with coastal infrastructure. In experimental work through the NSF NEESR program, long wave breaking over a longshore-variable, shallow water shelf has been examined in detail. An extensive and novel set of experimental data is obtained. Through the use of this data, a new set of depth-integrated equations, including turbulent and rotational physics, are calibrated. This model permits high confidence simulations of the turbulent dynamics necessary to predict hydrodynamic forces and processes such as scalar or sediment transport. Example applications of this developed numerical model will be shown, including tsunami flow around individual buildings in a ârealâ city, storm wave impacts on coastal bridges and levees, and long-wave-induced turbulent circulations inside the Ports of LA/Long Beach. Finally, future research directions and opportunities for collaboration will be discussed.

The Role of Data Management and Data Mining in Infrastructure Management
Mon, Jun 27, 2011 @ 04:00 PM - 05:00 PM
Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Conferences, Lectures, & Seminars
Abstract: It is certainly no surprise that construction and operations of infrastructure systems require a huge amount of information from specifications, plans, construction documents, inventory management, cost estimating, and scheduling, for the construction phase and maintenance records, and inspections and
sensor data from the operations phase. As this industry adopts new computer technologies, computerized construction/operations data are becoming more and more available. There exist numerous opportunities to exploit and extract knowledge from the vast amount of infrastructure data.
Unlike much previous research in Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) that has been successfully applied in several domains, in the infrastructure domain, however, the data are of multiple types and from many different sources, some with very low quality. Professor Soibelman will be introducing the
results obtained from several data centric studies developed by his research team at the CMU Advanced Infrastructure Systems group.
Biography: Professor Soibelman obtained his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the Civil Engineering Department of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He worked as a construction manager for 10 years before moving in 1993 to the US where he obtained in 1998 his PhD in Civil Engineering Systems
from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1998 he started as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. In 2004 he moved as an Associate Professor to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and in 2008 he was promoted at CMU to Professor. During the last 12 years he focused his research on advanced data acquisition, management, visualization, and mining for construction and operations of advanced infrastructure systems. He published over 100 books, books chapters, journal papers, conference articles, and reports and performed research with funding from NSF (NSF career award and several other NSF grants), NASA, DOE, IBM, Bosch, IDOT, RedZone Robotics, US Army, and NIST among many others funding agencies. His areas of interest are: Use of information technology for economic development, information technology support for construction management, process integration during the development of large‐scale engineering systems, information logistics, artificial intelligence, data mining, knowledge discovery, image reasoning, text mining, machine learning, advanced infrastructure systems, sensors, streaming data, data driven sustainability, and Multireasoning Mechanisms. He is the current Editor in‐chief of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering and the past chair of the ASCE Construction Institute Construction Research Council.

Thu, Jun 30, 2011 @ 03:30 PM - 05:00 PM
Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science
Conferences, Lectures, & Seminars
Speaker: Professor Han-Lim Choi , Division of Aerospace Engineering, KAIST
Talk Title: Robust Planning of Distributed Robotic Agents
Abstract: This seminar presents high-level planning approaches for networked robotic agents when the mission objective is to extract information in a dynamic uncertain environment. The talk discusses methodologies to perform robust distributed task planning for a heterogeneous team of agents performing cooperative missions. We
present the consensus-based bundle algorithm (CBBA) which is a decentralized cooperative iterative auction algorithm for assigning tasks to agents. CBBA uses two phases to achieve a conflict-free task assignment. A key feature of CBBA is that its consensus protocol aims at agreement on the winning bids and corresponding winning agents (i.e., consensus in the spaces of decision variables and objective function). This enables CBBA to create conflict-free solutions that are relatively robust to inconsistencies in the current situational awareness. Recent extensions to handle more realistic multi-UAV operational complications such as communication limitation and coupling in mission descriptions will also be reported.
