Title: Automated Generators and Benchmarks for Scientific Workflows

Committee Members: Dr. Aiichiro Nakano (chair), Dr. Rafael Ferreira da Silva, Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Dr. Bhaskar Krishnamachari, Dr. Srivatsan Ravi

Abstract: Scientific workflow applications have gained significant importance in past decades, and their automated
execution on large scale computing platforms has been the subject of extensive research. To evaluate these
workflow algorithms and systems, realistic workflow instances are needed. Existing public repositories offer
instances for a few scientific applications that are limited in scope and not available for all application scales
of interest. To address this issue, synthetic workflow generators have been developed, but they are manual
and target only a few applications. Previously, this work introduced WfChef, a component of the WfCommons
framework that automates the generation of synthetic workflows for any scientific application and produces
more realistic workflows than the hand crafted generators.
I now propose assessing the realism of WfChefs generated synthetic workflow instances when real instance
sets of different sizes are offered using the same metrics used previously, as well as the time required to generate
the instances. I also propose using WfChef to generate workflow benchmark specifications that can be translated
into benchmark code to be executed with current workflow systems. This approach generates workflow tasks
with arbitrary performance characteristics and with realistic task dependency structures based on those seen in production workflows
