CENG SEMINAR SERIES"Data Mining in Large-Scale Distributed Systems"Prof. Assaf SchusterComputer Science DepartmentTECHNION - Israel Institute of TechnologyAbstract:In this talk, we present a general methodology for computing and mining data in large-scale distributed networks. Central to our approach are algorithms that output ad hoc results. These results are accurate because the changes in the global database are usually stationary. Another key idea is the development of super-scalable distributed algorithms for rather simple primitives. The high scalability is achieved by means of local computing, a method which also implies anytime computing, incrementality, and robustness. The scalable primitives then become building blocks for higher-level and more complicated data mining goals through correct and efficient composition, which also preserves locality. The talk will focus on peer-to-peer networks, where the recent trends of e-economy, dropping storage prices, and increased connectivity, allow peers to collect and share huge volumes of valuable data, previously available only to corporations. We show how our methodology can be used to devise efficient algorithms that can be employed in peer-to-peer networks to meet challenges such as association rule mining and facility location.Bio:Associate Professor Assaf Schuster (http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~assaf,) received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since being awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1991 he has been with the Computer Science Department at the Technion—the Israel Institute of Technology. His current research interests include Grid Systems, Peer-to-Peer Networks, Large-Scale Distributed Data Mining, and other challenges in the distributed, parallel and high-performance arena. He established and heads the Distributed Systems and Data Mining Laboratory (DSL) at the Technion (http://dsl.cs.technion.ac.il).Host: Prof. Viktor Prasanna, x04483 http://engineering.usc.edu/calendar/
