  • COMET

    Wed, Jun 28, 2006 @ 08:00 AM - 05:00 PM

Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

    Workshops & Infosessions

A One Week Summer Camp and Workshop for selected Outstanding High Schools Juniors
from across California Schools and a selected number of Science Teachers
Selected applicants will receive free accommodations, meals and training during the
    workshop days at USC
    June 26-June 30, 2006
    University of Southern California
    Los Angeles, CA 90089Objectives:
    • Nurture students of today to become the energy entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
    • Provide a practical way for high school students to explore careers in energy related areas and to become the
    industry professionals of the future
    • Expose science teachers to the professional and technology issues of the oil and gas industry and its
importance in the U.S. and the world today. Familiarity with technological advances and the application of new
concepts to increase production and improve the recovery efficiency of energy sources are also important
    objectives of the program.
    • Motivate science teachers to apply and disseminate the acquired knowledge of the energy issues to educate
the new generations about the energy challenges and opportunities. The program is also geared to help
science teachers in recruiting future scientists who may develop new techniques for energy production by
balancing the technical, environmental & economical factors involved in the process.
    • Inform and motivate the public about the energy issues of today, the challenges of tomorrow and the need for
action to meet our future energy demand by combining new technologies, sensible legislation, environmental
    responsibility and energy conservation.

  • Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics in Mesoscopic Circuits

    Wed, Jun 28, 2006 @ 02:00 PM - 03:00 PM

Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

    Conferences, Lectures, & Seminars

"Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics in Mesoscopic Circuits: High-fidelity Measurement and Quantum Feedback Control"SPEAKER: Prof. Hsi-Sheng Goan, National Taiwan UniversityABSTRACT:
Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) is a promising solid-state quantum computing architecture. It also has excellent potential as a platform for quantum control-especially quantum feedback control-experiments. However, the current scheme for measurement in circuit QED is low efficiency and has low signal-to-noise ratio for single-shot measurements. The low quality of this measurement makes the implementation of feedback difficult, and here we propose a scheme for measurement in circuit QED architectures that can significantly improve signal-to-noise ratio and potentially achieve quantum-limited measurement. Such measurements would enable the implementation of quantum feedback protocols and we illustrate this with a simple entanglement-stabilization scheme.Joint work with G. Milburn, M. Sarovar, and T.S. Spiller.BIO: Hsi-Sheng Goan is a Professor of Physics at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, working on solid state implementations of quantum computing in collaboration with the Center for Quantum Computing in Australia.HOST: Prof. Todd Brun, tbrun@usc.edu
