    Hello Trojans!
    Are you looking for assistance on how to best adjust to the return to campus, improve your social skills, cultivate time management skills, and alleviate stress? Come to our workshops and Drop-in hours hosted by the USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity. No reservation or appointment is required for our general workshops and drop-ins.

    KCLC will be hosting Welcome Week workshops on Returning to Campus and Time Management. Starting in September, the workshops will have a weekly theme of time management, reading strategies, stress management or test-taking. The workshops will be interactive with great tips and resources.

    The Drop-in hours, where you can meet with an academic coach to discuss learning strategies will start the second full week of the semester Monday-Friday. Please note: these may be held in a group format depending on staff availability and demand.

    For more information, see the attached flyers with dates and times. We have also attached a semester calendar and created a Student Success zip file as you prepare to start the semester.

    Title: Mining and leveraging temporal structures of human behavior in Online Platforms

    Abstract:

    With the development of technology in recent years, detailed data on human temporal behavior has become available. Many methods have been proposed for mining these human dynamic behavioral data, which have provided valuable insights for research, especially in computational social science. However, most methods analyze only sequential behavior and do not comprehensively consider inter-temporal information such as time intervals between users' actions. In this proposal, we leverage the time intervals of actions to understand human behavior from a mid-term perspective. We first argue that the engagement analysis without considering time interval differences among individuals may return a biased result and propose a method to mitigate those biases. Then we also propose an embedding-based approach to incorporate inter-temporal information into human behavior analysis, which enables us to mine the temporal context of action in a unified manner. Our proposal will demonstrate the importance of inter-temporal information, especially in the application of computational social science.

    This weekly workshop series will benefit researchers who are interested in or are starting to learn about the application of theoretical methods and techniques for the study of the physics and chemistry of the solid state. These hands-on oriented workshops are targeted towards undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students who wish to use Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods in their research. The aim is to teach the basics of ab initio atomistic materials simulation using the Quantum Espresso suite of codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling at the nanoscale. Fridays from 4-6 PM PST. Register here!
