    Mathematical Finance ColloquiumTitle: "Recent Trends in Financial Mathematics and Economics"Jaksa Cvitanic, California Institute of TechnologyMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2008, 3:00-4:00 PM, KAP 249Abstract: In the first half of this talk I will give a broad overview of various topics that researchers in Financial Mathematics and Engineering have been focusing on in recent years, from general semi-martingale theory of pricing and portfolio optimization, to practical numerical and statistical algorithms. In the second half, I will talk about results coming from, or related to my recent research, and, in particular, about using Contract Theory in Financial Economics, and questions of equilibrium effects on prices and trading strategies.

    ISE 650 SEMINAR IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING - "Nonlinear Optimization: Models, Algorithms and Software"Guest Speaker: Dr. Richard WaltzResearch Assistant Professor, USC Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering ABSTRACT: This talk will provide a modern overview of the field of nonlinear
    optimization. The talk will present a variety of diverse model
    categories that can be tackled using nonlinear optimization
    techniques. Rather than focusing on the details of specific
    algorithms for solving nonlinear optimization models, the talk will
    present the general conceptual framework common to all algorithms.
    Current software tools available for nonlinear optimization and their
    practical capabilities will also be briefly summarized. The talk is
    intended as both an introduction and overview of the field for
    non-experts. ******************************BIO:Dr. Richard Waltz joined the USC Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems
    Engineering in 2007 as a Research Assistant Professor. His research
    specialty is in the area of general-purpose algorithms and software
    for solving nonlinear optimization problems. Since 1999 he has been
    the primary developer of KNITRO, one of the most popular and widely
    used software packages for nonlinear optimization. In 2001, Dr. Waltz co-founded Ziena Optimization, Inc. Ziena
    specializes in software, modeling and consulting for nonlinear
    optimization. Prior to joining USC, he also served as a Research
    Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and
    Computer Science at Northwestern University. Dr. Waltz received his BS degree in Physics from the University of
    Notre Dame in 1996; and his Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical and

    Assessment of the Last 20 Years and Current Research Opportunities"Professor Jim RawlingsDepartment of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI ABSTRACT: This talk, intended for the general chemical engineering audience, provides a critical assessment of the research progress in the fields of dynamic operation of chemical processes and process control. The following points are discussed:- What new intellectual ideas, concepts, and tools have emerged from this research field during the last 20 years.- How successfully have the research innovations in problem conceptualization, formulation, and solution been reduced to industrial practice.- What application areas have benefited from this research. Next we present a selection of open problems and research challenges. These research challenges are formulated by enumerating the current industrial needs in different application areas, and identifying common themes that can be addressed by developing new tools in systems theory and engineering. AustinPresident and CEO, The Aerospace CorporationABSTRACT: Dr. Austin will open her address by celebrating Dr. Rechtin's legacy, saluting his accomplishments and reaffirming his relevance for current and aspiring systems engineers. She will then turn to one of the areas that most concerned Dr. Rechtin: attracting the best and brightest minds to the aerospace industry and helping them grow and develop into the finest systems engineers in the world. As Dr. Rechtin once wrote, the aerospace business truly flourishes when it is populated by "creative individuals capable of understanding and resolving problems of almost overwhelming complexity." The human capital issue that Dr. Rechtin grappled with – making sure that the right people and processes were aligned – is more critical than ever today as aerospace companies attempt to build workforces that can meet the myriad challenges of the 21st century.The lecture will next focus on the needs, attitudes and world-view of Generation Y, the major supplier of tomorrow's systems engineers. As Dr. Austin will explain, Gen Y is – in many ways – the embodiment of Dr. Rechtin's thoughtful and authentic professional vision and values. Indeed, these young people have the imagination and integrity that are prerequisites for systems engineering innovation today. Moving to a more pragmatic plane, Dr. Austin will continue her talk by offering a five-point plan that's designed to help up-and-coming systems engineers get the knowledge, insights and intelligence they need to take their place in the aerospace industry of the near-future. Without this learning, it will be difficult for new hires to eventually transition from specialties to domain-related areas like airborne systems integration, and then on to end-to-end systems engineering.Dr. Austin will conclude by discussing Dr. Rechtin's love of space, as well as his respect for its power and potential. Like Dr. Rechtin, Dr. Austin believes that space gives all of us a much-needed sense of connectedness; it reinforces the fact that we are part of something larger than ourselves.
