This class is designed to provide a forum for leading healthcare executives and policymakers to address ways in which they and their organizations seek to improve the healthcare financing and delivery system in the U.S. and internationally. The course faculty/executive will rotate from term to term, which will provide students with unparalleled access to public, private and non-profit sector leaders, including industry executives, financiers, purchasers, accrediting agencies, foundations, state and federal government policymakers. Discussion will center on initiatives that address contemporary problems of the healthcare system, and the attendant leadership challenges and complexities. SPEAKER BIO: Keith Wilson, MD serves as chairman, president and CEO of Talbert Medical Group, an independent, physician-owned primary care and multi-specialty medical practice of approximately 200 physicians based in Costa Mesa. A surgeon and diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Wilson has been with Talbert since 1996, having previously served as chief of obstetrics/gynecology and perinatal services at FHP Hospital in Fountain Valley. Dr. Wilson is affiliated with numerous hospitals and professional groups and in 2001 received the American College of Physician Executives/Modern Healthcare Physician Executive National Award of Excellence. He is a graduate of and did his internship at Howard University College of Medicine, and his residency at Martin Luther King/Drew Hospital. Dr. Wilson earned a BS in chemistry/chemical engineering from USC.

Refreshments will be served. **ABSTRACT: As global trade continues to increase, cargo traffic at the nation's ports continues to increase at dramatic levels. This growth in the number of containers has already introduced congestion and threatened the accessibility and capacity of the rail network system supporting port
facilities. As a result, various US rail lines have experienced severe
congestion.Trains operating in densely populated metropolitan areas that are near port facilities typically encounter complex trackage configurations. To make optimal use of the available rail capacity, some portions of the rail network may consist of single-track lines while other locations may consist of double- or triple-track lines. Because of varying local conditions, different points in the rail network may have different speed limits. We formulate a graphical technique for modeling such complex rail networks; and we use this technique to develop a deadlock-free algorithm for dispatching each train to its destination with nearly minimal travel time while (a) abiding by the speed limits at each point on each trains route; and (b) maintaining adequate headways between trains. We implemented this train-dispatching algorithm in a simulation model of the movements of passenger and freight trains in Los Angeles County, and we validated the simulation as yielding an adequate approxim ation to the current system performance.Biography:Maged M. Dessouky, Ph.D., is Professor in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. Dr. Dessouky's research interests are in logistics, transportation, scheduling, simulation, and applied operations research.
He has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator of over 30 funded research projects supported by a number of sources including the National Science Foundation, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, CalTrans, Federal Transportation Authority, Los Angeles County and Department of Defense, among others. This research has lead to over 40 refereed journal articles. Presented by Hong Chen Professor and Chair of Operations and Logistics, Sauder School of Business, University of British ColumbiaIn this talk, we examine the inventories of publicly traded American retail, wholesale and manufacturing companies between 1981 and 2003. The median of manufacturing inventory holdings was reduced from 96 days to 81 days. The greatest reduction was found for work-in-process inventory while finished-goods inventory did not decline. The median of wholesale inventory holding periods was reduced from 72 days to 52 days, while retail inventory did not start to decline until about 1995. Firms with abnormally high inventories have abnormally poor long term stock returns. Both manufacturers and wholesalers with medium-to-low inventory tend to have good stock return, but firms with the lowest inventories have only average returns. Retailers with very lower inventory tend to have good stock returns. Hong Chen first joined UBC in 1989, and is currently a professor and chair of operations and logistics at Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. During 2003-2005, Hong Chen was one of the founding faculty members and academic associate dean at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, which is funded by Li Ka Shing Foundation and the only private business school in China. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1982, and received his M.S. degree in 1983 and Ph.D. degree in 1987, both in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University. He was Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University during 1987-1988. Chen's research interests are primarily in operations research, operations management, supply chain management, and the analysis, design and control of stochastic systems such as manufacturing systems, service systems, and economic and financial systems. He has published over 40 refereed papers. He is a member of INFORMS, MSOM Society and Applied Probability Society. He was the president for INFORMS Society on Applied Probability (1995/96). Lisbon, PortugalABSTRACTThis seminar will focus on an innovative approach for performing preliminary life-cycle assessments (LCA) during early product design stages. The overhead in developing parametric LCA models for a diverse range of product concepts and the lack of detailed information during conceptual design stages make the integration of traditional LCA models into product design impractical. The learning surrogate LCA method uses artificial neural networks (ANN) and requires readily accessible product information to provide approximate, yet powerful, analytical LCA results, early in the conceptual design phase. ANN are trained to generalize on product attributes, which are characteristics of product concepts, and environmental data from pre-existing LCA studies. The product design team queries the trained artificial model with new high-level attributes to quickly obtain an approximate environmental assessment for a new product concept. The predicted environmental performance, along with other key performance measures, can be used in tradeoff analysis and concept selection, and thus be timely incorporated into product development cycles. Between 1975 and 1986 Dr. Freund held various industry positions generally in the field of the application of Industrial Engineering methodologies in hospitals and other health care delivery facilities. He specialized in the area of nurse staffing for inpatient units, developing a measure of patient acuity and nursing workload based on assignment difficulty. Since joining SJSU, he has continued his consulting practice in the areas of health care systems productivity, systems simulation, workplace ergonomics, and statistical process control. He is a Fellow in the Institute of Industrial Engineers and is currently is serving IIE as a National Vice President for Technical Networking. He also is currently chairing a sub-committee of the Council of Industrial Engineering Academic Department Heads (CIEADH) that is designing and implementing a new (global) "Innovations in Curriculum" award this year. He is a recipient of an IBM 2006 Faculty Award in the area of services science, management, and engineering.

Umstattd Professor, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve UniversityThere is overwhelming evidence that people are sensitive to risk, but stochastic optimization model for supply chain management usually presuppose a risk-neutral decision maker. This talk concerns the representation of preferences in dynamic stochastic models. How should joint preferences for risk and timing be represented? This talk explains(a) why the usual representation in economics and finance is logically inconsistent, and (b) how to do it right! The talk briefly indicates the effects of doing it right in the standard dynamic newsvendor models that coordinate operational and financial decisions. Matt Sobel is the William E. Umstattd Professor at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. His research interests include stochastic optimization models, coordination of operations with finance and marketing, supply chain management, choices made over time and under uncertainty, environmental management, and entrepreneurship. He is an INFORMS Fellow, and his numerous publications have appeared in all the INFORMS journals. SPEAKER BIOS:Thomas Hennessy currently serves as president and CEO of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. He has spent more than 20 years in the investor-owned segment of hospital management, including as the head of the European Group for National Medical Enterprises (now known as Tenet Healthcare). He led a research team to Baku Azerbaijan, and led hospitals in Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Beach and Boston.For the past eight years Mr. Hennessy has worked with Catholic Healthcare West and its 42 hospitals. A "systems" innovator, he was co-director of the CHW productivity project. His work has been instrumental in establishing more effective staffing models critical to CHW's financial viability. He currently acts in interim management roles, having served as president over seven CHW hospitals. Mr. Hennessy received his BS in biological sciences at the University of California at Santa Barbara. After receiving his commission in the US Army he went on to receive a joint degree in business and hospital administration from Cornell University.Mark Gamble, regional vice president of the Greater Los Angeles Area for the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) since September 2003, provides leadership in public policy and advocacy programs associated with health care for more than 120 constituent hospitals and health care systems in the greater Los Angeles area.Mr. Gamble has held a variety of positions within HASC since he joined the organization in 1995, allowing him to gain a broad level of experience in health care and association management. He is a member of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee and Rotary International. He was a Big Brother with Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles for more than 11 years and currently serves on the board of directors for the Wellness Community–Foothills, a support group for cancer patients and their families.A native of Southern California, Mr. Gamble earned his MBA from Woodbury University and his bachelor's degree in business administration from California Lutheran University.Le Anne Trachok is vice president of revenue services for Catholic Healthcare West, the largest not-for-profit hospital chain on the west coast. Headquartered in San Francisco, Catholic Healthcare West has annual net revenues of $6 billion. Ms. Trachok provides strategy, guidance and oversight for the revenue cycle operations for CHW's 42 hospitals across three states. Ms. Trachok has more than 20 years of experience working with healthcare providers and payers to improve financial performance. Conversely, capitalism's antipode -- statism in any form -- those systems that deny the principle of individual rights, necessitates both political oppression and economic destitution. The purpose of this talk is to show this and why these claims are true. This talk shows that wherever the political/economic system of capitalism is instituted on any continent in any era men's freedom and prosperity are greatly increased. This was as true of 18th century Europe as it is of 21st century Asia. From its earliest days, capitalism raised the poor's living standards and, within a century, eradicated in the Western world the ages-old scourge of child labor. At the turn of the 21st century, the enormous benefits of capitalism are beginning to be reaped in the 3rd World, especially in Asia. As Ayn Rand stated, capitalism is the ideal social system and this talk, based on three years of research for 'The Capitalist Manifesto,' proves it.Date: Fri, Oct 27, 2006

He has given addresses at Harvard, Stanford, West Pont, Northwestern, Carnegie-Mellon, Columbia, the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, USC, among others. He is a frequent contributor to several major newspapers as well as a frequent radio and TV commentator. He is also affiliated with the Ayn Rand Institute, where he is a Senior Writer and Speaker. Business/business casual attire requested.SPEAKER BIOS:Thomas Hennessy currently serves as president and CEO of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. He has spent more than 20 years in the investor-owned segment of hospital management, including as the head of the European Group for National Medical Enterprises (now known as Tenet Healthcare). He led a research team to Baku Azerbaijan, and led hospitals in Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Beach and Boston.For the past eight years Mr. Hennessy has worked with Catholic Healthcare West and its 42 hospitals. A "systems" innovator, he was co-director of the CHW productivity project. His work has been instrumental in establishing more effective staffing models critical to CHW's financial viability. He currently acts in interim management roles, having served as president over seven CHW hospitals.Mr. Hennessy received his BS in biological sciences at the University of California at Santa Barbara. After receiving his commission in the US Army he went on to receive a joint degree in business and hospital administration from Cornell University.Mark Gamble, regional vice president of the Greater Los Angeles Area for the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) since September 2003, provides leadership in public policy and advocacy programs associated with health care for more than 120 constituent hospitals and health care systems in the greater Los Angeles area.Mr. Gamble has held a variety of positions within HASC since he joined the organization in 1995, allowing him to gain a broad level of experience in health care and association management. He is a member of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee and Rotary International. He was a Big Brother with Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles for more than 11 years and currently serves on the board of directors for the Wellness Community–Foothills, a support group for cancer patients and their families.A native of Southern California, Mr. Gamble earned his MBA from Woodbury University and his bachelor's degree in business administration from California Lutheran University.Le Anne Trachok is vice president of revenue services for Catholic Healthcare West, the largest not-for-profit hospital chain on the west coast. Headquartered in San Francisco, Catholic Healthcare West has annual net revenues of $6 billion. Ms. Trachok provides strategy, guidance and oversight for the revenue cycle operations for CHW's 42 hospitals across three states.Ms. Trachok has more than 20 years of experience working with healthcare providers and payers to improve financial performance. Prior to joining Catholic Healthcare West in 2002, she was with Andersen Business Consulting, UCLA Medical Center and National Medical Enterprises (now Tenet Healthcare). Her experience includes not-for-profit, for-profit and teaching institutions and crosses hospitals, clinics and physician group practices. During her career she has worked with over 150 entities across the U.S.Ms. Trachok is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA.
