    Hello Trojans!

    Are you looking for assistance on returning to campus, improving their time management skills, and alleviating stress? Please come to our workshops and Drop-in hours hosted by the USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity. No reservation or appointment is required for our workshops and drop-ins.

    KCLC will be hosting Drop-in Hours and Skill Building for Success Workshops on Zoom with a weekly theme of time management, reading strategies, stress management or test-taking. The workshops will be interactive with great tips and resources.

    This week, KCLC will be focusing on Stress Management Tips, understanding how you experience stress and exploring and practicing various ways to cope.

    Drop-in hours are available for undergraduate or graduate students to meet with an academic coach without needing to make a reservation. These sessions may be held in a group setting, dependent upon staffing availability and demand.

    Talk Title: Nurturing Tomorrow's CS Leaders Together

    Abstract: With the recent surge of interest in and increasing need for AI, machine learning, and data science, we computer scientists and engineers are poised to welcome the golden age of computer science and reimagine new opportunities together for tomorrow's CS leaders. We will equip students with a solid theoretical foundation, state-of-the-art technology, and high-level skills so they are ready to be leaders in this fast-developing discipline. We will do this while enhancing diversity and equity on and off campus; promoting inclusiveness; and fostering a vibrant research and teaching ecosystem in which faculty and students excel in their unique ways. We strive to remain a global leader pursuing excellence in computer science education, research, and service and to stay at the forefront of computer science with world-class faculty and strong, aspiring students, and all in a student-focused, faculty-led, ethical, and creative learning environment.

    Biography: Dr. Huan Liu is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. He was recognized for excellence in teaching and research in Computer Science and Engineering at ASU. His research interests include AI, data mining, feature selection, and social media mining. He co-authored the textbook, Social Media Mining: An Introduction, by Cambridge University Press. He graduated 32 PhD students at ASU and many of them won highly coveted awards (click here for their first job after graduation). He is Founding Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Big Data, its Specialty Chief Editor of Data Mining and Management, Editor in Chief of ACM TIST, and Conference Co-Chair of ACM WSMD2022. His research has been funded by NSF, AFOSR, AFRL, ARL, ARO, DARPA, NASA, and ONR, among others. He is a Fellow of AAAI, AAAS, ACM, and IEEE.

    The USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity is offering two programming initiatives as you continue to adjust to campus and prepare for your second round of midterms.

    1. Back to SChool Connections - a skill-building workshop series to help you develop strategies to build, deepen and improve your relationships. Learn how to make and maintain friends, talk to your professors and classmates, and resolve conflicts with your roommates.

    This weekly workshop series will benefit researchers who are interested in or are starting to learn about the application of theoretical methods and techniques for the study of the physics and chemistry of the solid state. These hands-on oriented workshops are targeted towards undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students who wish to use Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods in their research. The aim is to teach the basics of ab initio atomistic materials simulation using the Quantum Espresso suite of codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling at the nanoscale. Fridays from 4-6 PM PST. Register here!
