    Viterbi School of Engineering Graduate Admission

    REACH is an all-expenses paid, doctoral preview program that takes place at USC’s University Park Campus near downtown Los Angeles. Round-trip transportation, lodging and meals for REACH participants will be paid for by the USC Viterbi School. Attendees who later apply to the USC Viterbi School for doctoral study will also have their $85 application fee waived.

    In fulfilling our mission, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering actively recruits engineering achievers from all backgrounds into its doctoral degree programs, particularly students historically underrepresented in the field (African-American, Latino and Native American). Through REACH, under-represented engineering achievers get firsthand exposure to exciting research opportunities, world-class faculty, rich academic programs, and stellar student services and mentoring resources.

    EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
    Selected participants will have the opportunity to:

    learn about Viterbi School engineering doctoral programs of study
    gain insight on the graduate application, admission and financial aid processes at USC
    interact with current and prospective doctoral students, faculty, and staff in the Viterbi School
    find out about summer research opportunities in the Viterbi School
    benefit from special presentations and workshops by faculty and staff
    participate in tours of the USC campus, research labs, and departmental facilities
    experience USC campus life and explore the greater Los Angeles area

    SELECTION CRITERIA
    Eligible juniors are invited to apply to participate in the REACH program. Only those individuals who have a strong record of academic achievement and are seriously considering Ph.D. study upon graduation are encouraged to apply.

    Exceptional seniors with a demonstrated background in research will also be considered.

    Eligibility:

    3.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in undergraduate studies is recommended
    Majors in engineering, applied mathematics, or physical sciences (biology, chemistry, physics)
    Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or a citizen of Canada
    Applications are particularly encouraged from students who are Black/African Americans, Latino/Chicano Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders.

    Two letters of reference submitted by faculty on behalf of the applicant.
    (Note: a third letter from a faculty, staff person, or researcher is optional)

    Do you have clothes that you don’t wear much or don’t need? You could clear out space in your closet and make a #ViterbiImpact at the same time by donating those clothes to the Klein Institute for Undergraduate Engineering Life (KIUEL) clothing drive. Please bring any donations to the donation box in RTH110 before 5pm on the 22nd!

    All clothes must be clean and in good condition (not stained or torn).

    Collected clothing will be donated to the Salvation Army.

    Transfer Day is a half-day comprehensive program designed to give prospective transfer students the answers to questions about the transfer process. Transfer Day includes an hour-long Engineering Admission presentation, led by Viterbi's Transfer Admission Advisors, that will go over the admission process,recommended courses for engineers, transfer credit policy, etc.

    Abstract:
    The Internet is important for nearly all aspects of our society,
    affecting ordinary people, businesses, and social activities. Because of its importance and wide-spread applications, we want to have good knowledge about Internet's operation, reliability and performance, through various kinds of measurements. However, despite the wide usage, we only have limited knowledge of its overall performance and reliability. The first reason of this limited knowledge is that there is no central governance of the Internet, making both active and passive measurements hard. The second reason is the huge scale of the Internet. This makes brute-force analysis hard because of practical computing resouce limits such as CPU, memory and probe rate.


    This thesis states that sampling and aggregation are necessary to
    overcome resource constraints in time and space to learn about better knowledge of the Internet. Many other Internet measurement studies also utilize sampling and aggregation techniques to discover properties of the Internet. We distinguish our work by exploring novel mechanisms and new knowledge in several specific areas. First, we aggregate short-time-scale observations and use an efficient multi-time-scale query scheme to discover the properties and reasons of long-lived Internet flows. Second, we sample and probe /24 blocks in the IPv4 address space, and use greedy clustering algorithms to
    efficiently characterize Internet outages. Third, we show an
    efficient and effective aggregation technique by visualization and clustering. This technique makes both manual inspection and automated characterization easier. Last, we develop an adaptive probing system to study global scale Internet reliability. It samples and adapts probe rate within each /24 block for accurate beliefs. By aggregation and correlation to other domains, we are also able to study broader policy effects on Internet use, such as political causes, economic conditions, and access technologies.

    This thesis provides several examples of Internet knowledge discovery with new mechanisms of sampling and aggregation techniques. We believe our approaches of new sampling and aggregation mechanisms can be used by and will inspire new ways for future Internet measurement systems to overcome resource constraints, such as large amount and dispersed data.

    You are cordially invited to meet Kelly Goulis, Senior Associate Dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering, at our upcoming information session in Munich, Germany.

    Students who have earned or are in the progress of earning a Bachelor's degree in engineering, math, or a hard science (such as physics, biology, or chemistry) are welcome to attend to learn more about applying to our graduate programs.

    The information session will include a presentation on: Master's & Ph.D. programs available at USC, how to apply, scholarships, student life, and more. Students will also have the chance to ask questions and receive official brochures and handout information from USC. Light refreshments will be served.
