Talk Title: The Emerging Role of Patient-Calibrated Computational Modeling in Cancer Research: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract: Clinical oncology practice can generate a wide variety of data for patients, spanning molecular profiling, pathology, and radiology, which tend to be used in isolation when planning patient care. There is currently no technique to quantitatively combine these diverse data sources, along with novel in vitro measurements, to improve surgical and therapeutic planning. Similarly, while cancer research generates a staggering wealth of data spanning many scales, these data are generally not integrated into comprehensive models. We are likely missing emergent system-level cancer phenomena and the novel therapeutic targets they represent. In this talk, we will discuss efforts by my lab, the USC Physical Sciences Oncology Center, and the Consortium for Integrative Computational Oncology to solve these issues. With a focus on patient pathology-calibrated breast cancer modeling and multidisciplinary lymphoma modeling, we will discuss the role for computational modeling in cancer research, encouraging results in quantitatively predicting clinical progression, the implications for making and quantitatively testing biological hypotheses, and the role of computational modeling in facilitating a deeper understanding of biology, pathology, and radiology.
