Lachlan Andrew - CalTech

ABSTRACT:
This talk will be in two parts. The first describes a novel technique
for opportunistic source coding for data gathering in wireless sensor
networks. Wireless networks are intrinsically broadcast, although the
reliability of transmission reduces with distance. In opportunistic
routing, packets to aim to make long but unreliable hops. If the attempt
fails, the packet is instead forwarded by an intermediate node, which
"overheard" the initial attempt. This work proposes a technique for
allowing network coding to be used in networks making use of opportunistic
routing.
This work was co-authored by Tao Cui, Lijun Chen, Tracey Ho and
Steven Low.
The second part describes a simple signaling scheme designed to
signal congestion information in wireless networks. It is well
established that purely end-to-end congestion control is insufficient for
multi-hop wireless networks because a link may cause congestion on a
neighboring link without itself experiencing congestion. This calls for
explicit signaling of congestion information. The proposed scheme
provides a very light-weight means of piggybacking this information on
existing packets.
This work was co-authored by Stephen Hanly, Tony Cui and Sammy Chan.
BIO:
Since 2005, Lachlan Andrew has been a senior research engineer
working with Steven Low at Caltech. He obtained his BE, BSc and PhD from
the University of Melbourne in 1992, 1993 and 1997. His interests are the
analysis and design of resource allocation algorithms for
telecommunications networks, including congestion control, power control
and medium access control. In October, he will move to Swinburne
University of Technology in Australia as an associate professor.
