SPEAKER: Dr. Gerhard Kramer, Bell Laboratories, Lucent TechnologiesABSTRACT: A relay network has a source terminal transmitting a message to a destination terminal with the help of one or more relays. Such a situation might occur in a multi-hop or sensor network where there are several terminals that help each other transmit data. We develop simple communication models for such networks, review existing information theory for the models, and develop several multi-hopping strategies, where by multi-hopping we mean that the relays successively decode the message before it arrives at the destination. We show that the rates of these strategies are information-theoretically optimal for certain wireless scenarios. We extend the results to wider classes of problems, including constrained relays, multi-antenna (MIMO) relays, multi-access relay channels and broadcast relay channels. The talk is based on joint work with Michael Gastpar (University of California, Berkeley) and Piyush Gupta (Bell Laboratories).BIOGRAPHY: Gerhard Kramer received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and the Dr.sc.techn. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998. From July 1998 to March 2000, he was with Endora Tech AG, Basel, Switzerland, as a communications engineering consultant. Since May 2000 he has been with the Mathematics of Communications Research Department, Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, Murray Hill, NJ. His research has been focused on network information theory, iterative decoding, and source coding.HOST: Dr. Keith Chugg, x.07294, chugg@usc.edu
