Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Texas at AustinABSTRACT: Lasers and optics are becoming important tools for scientific research and industrial applications. The goal of our laboratory is to investigate light-matter interactions at extremely short time and length scales and develop advanced micro/nano-systems for applications in biomedical engineering and the life sciences. In this talk, I will discuss my laboratory's research progress in nanophotonics and nanomanufacturing and associated issues of near-field optics, mechanics, and biomedical applications. Topics in this talk include (1) optical enhancement using near-field effects, surface plasmons effects, and multiphoton effects; (2) thermal/fluid transport involving near-field heat transfer; and (3) biomedical applications including the development of micro/nanoscale 3-D scaffolds for tissue engineering and advanced biosystems with nanoscale control of growth factors and topography for nerve regeneration.WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2007,

3:30 - 4:30 PMABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Chen is Pearlie D. Henderson Centennial Endowed Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Austin. He received his BE degree in Thermal Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1989 and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999. His research interests lie in nanophotonics, nanomanufacturing, biomaterials and bionanotechnology, ultrafast science and engineering, thermal / fluid Transport in micro and nano-systems (MEMS / NEMS). Dr. Chen received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2001, an Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 2002, Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005, and a Best Paper Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2006. Professor Chen is an Associate Editor of Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology. He is also an Editorial Board member of a journal – Nanomedicine. In 2003, Dr. Chen served as a Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Advanced Packaging: Special Issue on NEMS/MEMS Packaging. He is an editor of a book – "Nanomanufacturing" (American Scientific Publishers, 2007). Dr. Chen is a committee member of the ASME Nanotechnology Institute and IEEE Nanotechnology Council. He serves on the technical committee for NEMS/MEMS packaging of the Electronics and Photonics Packaging division, biomanufacturing of the Manufacturing Engineering division, and micro and nano-systems of the Design Engineering division of ASME.
