Prof. Bahram Jalali
Professor of Electrical Engineering
UCLARecent UCLA work on active silicon photonics including the demonstration of the first silicon laser will be presented. These devices exploit Raman and Kerr nonlinearities in tightly confined silicon waveguides to perform functions that were perceived to be impossible in pure silicon. It will also be shown that scaling the device dimensions is a priority as it enhances the efficiency of nonlinear interactions through the reduction of nonlinear absorption.Bahram Jalali is a Professor of Electrical Engineering, the former Director of the DARPA Center for Optical A/D System Technology (COAST). From 1988-1992, he was a Member of Technical Staff at the Physics Research Division of AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. where he conducted research on ultrafast electronics and optoelectronics. He was responsible for successful development and delivery of 10 Giga bit-per-second lightwave circuits to U.S. Air Force in 1992. His current research interests are in microwave photonics, integrated optics and fiber optic ICs.
Dr. Jalali has over 200 publications and holds 6 US patents. He is a Fellow if IEEE and the Chair of the Los Angeles Chapter of the IEEE Lasers and Electro Optics Society (LEOS). He was the General Chair for the IEEE international conference on Microwave Photonics (MWP) in 2001 and its Steering Committee chair from 2001 present. He is also a member of the California Nano Systems Institute (CNSI).
While on leave from UCLA from 1999-2001, Dr. Jalali founded Cognet Microsystems, a Los Angeles based fiber optic component company. He served as Cognet's CEO, President and Chairman, from the company's inception through its acquisition by Intel Corporation in April 2001. He received the BridgeGate 20 Award in recognition of his contributions to the Southern California economy. From 2001-2003, he served as a consultant in the Communication Group of Intel Corporation. Dr. Jalali serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Science Center.Date: Wednesday, November 3, 2004
